Coral beauty

So I went to my LFS today on a mission to pick up my first fish after starting my tank a few months ago. I have a biocube 14g and I told the fish guy what I had and that I was interested in a coral beauty. He said that it would be fine in my tank and that it only gets to be around 3"+. So when I got home I looked it up online and live aquaria has it as a min. Of 70 gallons. What gives?

Never believe a LFS that wants to make $$$ off you. Always do research on something you aren't sure of. Nowadays, most can access the net on their phone, before purchasing.

I've checked reefs2go and they say min. is 20g. WTF. Does anyone know what there talking about. Arrrrgggghh! And yes I should have done my research.

Wow that is sad...but you can still get some real nice fish for a 14g. Coral Beauties get big and thick-I seen one at Petco in one of their tiny cubes and that guy was at close to 4 inches. I never have gone back to Petco as I feel sorry for the fish.

Angels I have seen in tanks like to swim a lot between rocks---I don't think a 20g will do. I would say 75g for any angel. I am not an expert by any means-as I am sure guys here have had the tiny Angels in smaller tanks.

Well I'm just starting out and this is my first tank. The fish looks to be pretty happy and is eating good. I really like this fish. If the fish gets to be to big for my tank maybe I'll have to accommodate it with something larger down the road. I have a feeling I'm gonna end up with more then just one tank.

You can probably keep him until he gets too big- if you don't upsize on the tank by the time he out grows it...sell or trade him to another reefer. Coral Beauties are real beautiful angels and they don't cost a left nut. Still go back to the LFS and give them hell.

Coral Beautys get on the larger end of dwarf angels. If you want a dwarf, try out a cherub, flame back, or bi-color. The cherub would be fine in your tank for life, and the others possibly depending on how large they end up. I've kept dwarf angels in plenty of Nanos but all were 24g+. If you have a decent rock structure the cherub would probably be just fine. They are one of the least "reef safe" dwarf angels though.

What LFS was it?

I would just see how it goes for a while. All fish even from the same species have different personalities. My flameback just spends its time swimming in and out of rocks. I could probably keep it in a small tank filled with rock and it wouldnt know the difference. Keep in mind that if the fish thinks the tank is too small it will become more aggressive and be more inclined to nip at corals and bully other fish. You can always trade or sell on the forums as well. I honestly never trust what lfs or liveaquaria say. Observing the actual fish is the way I usually take.

No surprise there! I've seen them selling Dogface puffers as BW fish. I reported them to the Dept of Ag for selling dozens of bettas to a fighting ring. When I complained to the owner, she laughed at me & said it's no different than selling goldfish for food. I wrote the store a letter, too. When he didn't respond, I turned them in. For 2 years, they had to have everyone sigh a paper, saying they were not using these fish for fighting. To this day, they have a note posted saying 1 beta/purchase. It's all about the almighty $ to them.

So I woke up this morning and turned on my fish tank light and to my surprise I have a lot more algae in my tank than I did last night. What's my problem. Yesterday I introduced three snails and the coral beauty in to the tank. And I've fed the beauty what the store recommended. Lifeline herbivore minced and pellets. Is it because of the lifeline stuff or something else? Thanks

Increased the bioload, probably overfed to see the fish eat (pretty common), let the tank catch up with itself, you'll be fine.

The coral beauty *should* eat some of the algae too. I wouldnt worry too much about it just feed less and keep checking params. Ammonia gets away from me when I buy something new for the tank.

Should I be feeding it twice a day as recommended? Or is that too much. And also what do you guys feed your coral beauty?
