This may be your problem. Try putting your blues at something like 70-80% and your whites at 30-40%. Corals like the blue spectrum. A few years ago, I tried some lights that had way too many white diodes and not enough blues. My coral looked terrible.

I looked at your lights. I don’t see why you couldn’t grow anything you’d want under them. Are those horseshoe crabs in your tank?

Any of those three lighting technologies, singly or combined, can grow SPS with the right conditions. What black boxes do you have? They aren’t all the same. My old tank was grown completely under black boxes (ocean revive)

There’s a lot more to growing SPS than just lights. I imagine your black boxes are sufficient. Tell us about what went wrong and why you think it’s your lights. How old was your tank? What’s were your NO3 and PO4? What was your alkalinity? If you want new lights because you want a new look...

There’s a lot to unpack here. You already have Chinese black boxes and this alone would likely grow SPS just fine, but I don’t know enough about your tank. So what’s the issue that you’re trying to resolve? Metal halides, I’ve never used them, but the people who have been in it a long time...

I’ve found it to be a fast grower, always colored up, and always great PE. Even through my recent tank issues, it always looked happy. The fact that it’s a grower also makes it pretty affordable. There are corals out there that cost 3x and look half as good.

Where is the PO4 coming from? Do you have new dry rock?

Sorry to hear that. Did you ever test PO4? I usually just get brown coral from high nitrate, but high PO4 has killed some of my colonies in the past.

How are you bringing PO4 down? I just got home after basically not being here for three months. PO4 was at .36 on Sunday and with a bit of lanthanam and GFO, I have it down to .14.

I could probably get 20 frags off of one of my no name colonies to do this if people are interested.

They sit on zoas in my tank and make them close up. Otherwise no issue with them. I don’t even try to get rid of them.

Man, I feel you. I’m not exaggerating...I bet I have 2,000 of them in my 220. Some of them are as big as a quarter. My two triggers and pink face wrasse probably probably wouldn’t be buddies with a harlequin. I’ve read that linka starfish will eat asterina, but those have a bad survival rate...
