Adding Tapwater Stragith Into Tank

Hey, I was wondering if I can add tapwater to my saltwater tank?

Do I have to dechlorinate? Which method of adding water did you find most successful for your zoas?

What is reverse osmosis water?

Tap water really should go into any place animals live. You want to get a good RO/DI unit like this one http://www.chicagoreefs.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3117 or something like it. Tap water has metals in it that will build up and kill everything (if not right away). You want to refill from evaporation with fresh water and do water changes with saltwater. You also might want to do a little browsing in the water chemistry section here. You will find a TON of information about this subject, but ultimately, tap water=tank death.
 
+1 well put I did it the hard way and learned the hard way get a rodi unit it pays for it self immediately
 
Good point Luna. While you can buy bottled RODI (Reverse Osmosis-De Ionised) by the bottle at Jewel or walgreens or something, in the long run you will save money just getting a good unit for yourself. I was buying RODI and Saltwatter at MCF (local fish store) at first, but the $200 or so allows me to avoid constant trips to the store (I make them anyway, but don't have to carry 40/80 lbs of water ever time) and gives me access to the water I need anytime (everything always goes bad when the LFS is closed)
 
I just started my first saltwater tank a few weeks ago, and I bit the bullet and bought an RO/DI as soon as I bought my tank. It makes everything easy, that's for sure! It would have taken at least 10 trips and 50 bucks worth of containers to lug all the water I needed.

It's well worth the investment!! Course you could also figure gas into it too. ;)

I used treated tap water when I first started fishkeeping. I would treat it with "Prime" which is a declorinator/detoxifer. My fish and corals were fine. I was even told by a Coral Propagator in this area that they have always used treated tap water. I have a RODI unit now and if I need large amounts of water quickly, I go to the supermarket. The Butera market has RO water; $2 for 5 gallons.
 
Lol it depends on your townships water quality, me nd my friends frag tank is running on some mcf water and some of our own dechloronated mixed water. Basically a gamble. Most ppl here live in chicago and chicagos water is known to have heavymetals in it. Up in the burbs we have pretty good water
 
I'd say simple answer is NO. You'd have a really hard time in this hobby with tap water. Too many impurities.

The bottled water you buy is only DI & God knows when their filters have been changed.

DI is is 99.1 pure
RO/DI is 99.9 pure
but the question is you dont know when they have changed those filters!!
