APEX online (help)

Hey everyone. I've had my Apex up and running for about a year. I've never been able to hook it up to the Internet until now. I just moved my wife's office down to the main floor of the house as her previous office is becoming our soon to be baby's nursery. All I need is to get a long Ethernet cable and it'll be hard wired.
My questions...
Do I have to worry about my current settings getting messed up? I'm assuming there's new firmware that'll have to be downloaded and installed.
Once I attach the Ethernet cable what do I have to do? Do I have to connect to a laptop as well?
Would it be easier to just follow the unofficial users guide?
Are the Blackhawks tring to set a losing streak now as well?
Thanks,
BigB

if it will always be hard wired it makes it very easy. would suggest following the guide tho. the only thing i had trouble with was hooking it up to the outside world. you need to directly hook up your pc/apex to the router. then just update firmware, forward a few ports and boom. if you have any trouble you can call neptune, they have fantastic CS. dude took control of my pc and did it for me because i didnt have 2 100ft ethernet cables.

Once you connect the ethernet cable it depends on if you have a router. If so, you more than likely have DHCP setup which will assign your IP address automagically. If so, you will only need to verify the Apex has DHCP enabeled under network options menu in the display.

It is always a better option to statically assign the IP address and the process is covered in the offical user guide, (the unoffical guide is now offical on the neptune site, by the same author.)

I guess I should have been more specific. The apex will be directly/permanently hard wired to the modem/router via Ethernet cable.
"DHCP" and "static IP" = ?

Yup! Static IP is key otherwise your router will expire the ip address it assigns and you won't be able to access it. Give me a call if you have problems and I should be able to walk you through it.

The unofficial guide should be able to get you through it though. That's pretty much what I followed. The only other thing is that you will have to set up port 80 to be opened up. It'll explain that in the guide as well.

I'll have to call Dom's Italian people only APEX hotline. FO SHO.

Looks like you’re getting it worked out, but FYI on DCHP and Static.

They are the way a router assigns an IP address to an end device. For general argument, anything in the inter or intranet has an IP address. An administrator can either manually choose which devices get which addresses, static, or let the router decide via the DHCP protocol. DHCP has a timer and all devices must renew their address on a set interval and as a result can get a different address. This is not good if you want to access the device, as you never know what the IP address of the device is. So, typically you mix and match choosing static IP addresses on some devices and dhcp on others. Again the users guide does a good job to walk network noobs through what they need to set this up.

Yeah I had that happen with mine. Set it up without a static IP and couldn't access it at all. Went back into the router and set up a static IP, turned DCHP off in the apex and it's been running good now.

A few things:

First save your settings on your Apex before you update the firmware and try to add new settings. While I never had any problems losing my settings, it has been known to happen.

Following the user guide was easy when getting my Apex to work wirelessly here at home, it was getting it on my phone that took a bottle of Advil to figure out.

Static vs Standard IP, I didn't think you could change your IP address to static with some internet companies without paying for it? Either way if you don't use a static ip, when you lose the connection on your phone, just go home and figure out your new IP address and just change the numbers on your phone.

It is nice to have on the phone, especially if you are on vacation.

You mixing up your public and private IP addresses. OP is still working on his private in home network. The IP your ISP provides is for the internet and only comes into play when you are trying to setup APEX access from internet devices.

whenever i cant connect i immediately assume the worst, which is no power. i wud hate to have that feeling whenever the isp decided to change your IP

There are ways around the problem. Uverse gives you a static free(not that i recommend uverse), other is to pay for a static if available(comcast offers the service), or you can use DynDNS.

A cheap Webcam can help with the power outage situation so you can check visually to see there is in fact power. Another is I leave a PC on at home that I can remote log into. Also if you have battery backup for the Apex, router and all network equipment I have set the Apex up to give me a way to watch the tank go cold remotely.
