Camera suggestion

I'm looking to get a nice camera to take pictures of my corals and also everyday use (I know I will need different lenses). I'd like to keep it under or around $500. Any suggestions?

Digital SLR cameras normally roll up into high priced territories if you're looking for a new camera, but could be obtained used without the same price tag. There are a variety of different cameras that cover the territory gap that used to exist between little point-and-shoots and DSLRs. While different people will have different preferences in terms of their camera equipment, the reality is that the common 'big name' manufacturers all make excellent products. Canon, Nikon, Sony (formerly Minolta), etc.

As I shoot with a Sony Alpha-850, I know that the Sony NEX series would be in your price range and should provide great photos. People that shoot Canon or Nikon or other brands would be able to refer you to comparable products there, although I know that the Canon Eos Rebel is a DSLR that would likely fit into your price range.

The Sony NEX cameras also have interchangeable lenses and are nice quality cameras. Here's a link as an example.

I hope that helps point you in the right direction a bit.

In my opinion you have to go either Nikon or Canon. Personally I think Nikon's are a bit more ergonomic, but Canon's glass is a little bit better. You'd be able to pick up a used entry level dslr with a standard kit lens in your price range. I'd suggest going to a best buy and playing around with each brand and see which you like more.

Buy either Canon and Nikon ($450) and 50mm f1.8 ($90) will serve you good for a while then you save moneyl buy the expensive Micro len for better macro picture...

are you experienced with using an DSLR already?...
if not, the first thing I would look into is a class on how to use one. I learned the hard way that just buying a high quality DSLR doesn't mean your going to take high quality photos... :(

I have a canon t3i. I absolutely love it. Great for taking tank pics. Heck, if you can find a t1 or t2i cheaper, they are great as well.. Just make sure you get the "i" and not just the t3.

Love my new T3i. I don't think the photos come out a whole lot better than my old Cannon EOS Rebel XT, but the features, tech, and user interface make them a lot easier to achieve.

All DSLR are comparable. It all depends on the ergonomics. Go to Best Buy, try out a Canon vs Nikon and pick base on what feels the best for YOU. Their bodies and lens are so similar that unless you are a pro, it makes no difference which one you go with. Then get Lightroom.
