Since my Orange Dendro colonies have forced me to drop the temp of my tank, which I had running at 80 degrees, I figured I should probably be proactive and start investigating cooling options for my tank.

I’ve already dropped hundreds on my tank, so why stop there. I’m looking at getting a chiller for my setup for these insanely hot and humid summers we have in Chicago. I thought about just having my AC blowing whenever the temps go above 75 but there is no way in gay hell I would be able to keep paying that electric bill, and a chiller would most likely be more economical.

I’ve been around folks setups but I have only seen one person with a chiller *waves at Eric*. How many folks on here bring out the chiller for the warmer months, and which one do you have? Do you even use one?

Well when you have as much water as me you don't need a chiller or heater jeje.Small systems do require temp control.

My landlord would kick me out if I had your setup!!

I was getting ready to introduce myself at MACI and you walked away while we were talking to Mike!!! :yell:

Definitely invest in a chiller. The initial investment will make up for itself in short order. You won't have to always run the A/C for one, and you'll have piece of mind that you tank doesn't cook. My husband and I are hot bodied people and love the heat so we turn on the A/C when it hits 90 or so (and we'd still be okay after that). When the air temp reaches high 70s it is difficult to control the temp for sensitive species (SPS).

Remember, most chillers will not work if the ambient temp is 90 or above, so it's not a complete cure of running no A/C but you can be much more frugal with it. Invest in the right size too, take into account total water volume w/displacement, and then you'll need a separate pump to feed it or tie it into your return pump still keeping the recommend flow through the chiller. I use a JBJ 1/10 HP chiller on my system.

In the winter my chiller never kicks on (even with MH over the tank), but in warmer months and summer it kicks on every 30-60 minutes.

I use a 1/8 chiller from JBJ. Have it unplugged from my controller in winter but during the warmer months it is required.

Heres the thing: Yes if ambient temps are to high it will be less effect but will still work. Running a chiller inside your room or house is also a not so good idea due to the fact that the heat the chiller removes from your system will be dumped into your room. I have mine plumbed thru my wall into the garage where its way cooler and has a good ventilation.

A small to medium fan will also lower you temps a few degree however you will need to top off more often. Just a tasty little morsel to chew on.
