Dwarf Golden Eel

I am in the process of planning an upgrade from a 75g mixed reef to a 120g mixed. I am interested in getting a dwarf golden eel and was wondering how i should cover the tank. I have the 1/2" clear mesh screening on my 75g and was thinking the 1/4" clear mesh from BRS for the 120g. They say the average thickness of the eel is a pencil which is right around 1/4". Does anyone else have experience with these little guys and use mesh as opposed to the glass tops?

They have a way of getting out when there is no way.
They have even gone in hoses and gotten into my sump
I had 3 at the same time

Joe, they will not get through the mesh. However, they are escape artists and will jump out if you leave any part of the tank uncovered.

Interesting, I have always wanted one of these since they became more available in the hobby a few years ago. if they cant get through the 1/4" mesh as Brian stated, then I am sold.

@ Top Water - I am planning on securing the mesh tops with little 'L' brackets on a swivel so there is no way the eel can push the top off. I think the issue will be the ~1/2" between the screen and the top of the overflows. I am wondering if I fabricate a overflow cover outta 1/2" acrylic and place it on top, would that keep them out of the overflow area? I guess i could try to rig something to secure the covers onto the overflows too if needed. Plus i need to find a place to get scrape half inch black acrylic lol.

Let's put it this way I never lost one to natural causes and I probably had a total of 6 . Found an eel alive inside my skimmer once too . Smelled another dead in my filter sock . The rest dried up on the floor . Would I try again ? Yes they are great little eels. I keep a few quite a while before they they committed sueiside.

I shall attempt to keep one then. It will be a battle of wits..... everything I have read on them over the past few years seems in line with what you are saying though. I am going to try to "eel proof" my setup before it even gets wet so that may help a little. Thanks for the advice.

BTW, do you agree that they wont get through the 1/4" BRS clear mesh?

I have 2 in my system since less than a year now and I got 1/4" mesh from BRS and from home depot the window netting stuff. And it Sits right on top of my tank with no gaps from end to end. One of the eel hangs right next to overflow. I have 150 gallon and lots of rock they can move around. If they are happy they would do fine.

Nice looking tank Vic. Thanks for the confirmation. Going to be a few months till I get my new system up and running but I cant wait to snag an eel or two!
