Emerald Crabs

Do emeralds hunt and kill fish? I have one and he's getting pretty big. I've seen him swat at fish on occasion. I've lost a diamond goby and suspect the emerald.

yes, it's possible. They're oportunistic, if an easy meal were to show up, larger emeralds aren't lieky to look the other way. I wouldn't say they'd hunt down a fish, but a sleeping fish may be an easy meal.

Get only females and you'll be OK. The males go rogue once they get to a certain size. I've had them hunt fish, push over heavy rock structures for fun, eat frogspawn like popcorn, etc. They are assholes. Females are smaller and have small claws, and I've never had a problem with them.

I must have a male, then. He's currently residing in my sump. After eating some of my zoas and acting like he owns the joint it was time for him to go. He was great at bubble algae but it's currently gone, so so is he. If it comes back I'll try to get a much smaller (hopefully female, as you say) one.

He was on one of my top rocks, in a corner. I dipped the net in and he only had one way to go. Under the circumstances, it was pretty easy.

I've only had one small one but he never damaged anything. He was small and eventually fell victim to my puffer who ate every clean up crew member I added

Do you still have this crab? I need one that has an appetite for bubble coral. It's slowly starting to take over my tank.
