Getting Started

Hello Everyone,

I am getting started on a new tank and wanted to ask about some opinions on some of the equipment that I am looking into getting for my 20 Gallon reef tank. I've had a tank before but I bought it used and I am starting this one from scratch.

1. AquaClear 50 Power filter. What are some things I should put in the back to make sure the tank is healthy? I hear a lot of people use Carbon?

2. ViaAqua 100 Watt Heater. Has anyone had any problems with these?

3. 2 of Sun Sun JVP 528 GPH powerhead. I have a long tank so I was wondering if I would need two of these? One for each side? or will one create enough flow?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks!

Oh boy, setting up a tank; options are limitless.
If it was me, one of the first things I would consider drilling it for an overflow into a 10 g sump and drill a return line. The return line will aid in circulation and in the sump you can store your heater, filtration, and set up for an ATO.
Regarding carbon; some debate regarding this. I use it, but have heard reports of the carbon stripping the water "too much" and people see recession (or worse) on their SPS. Carbon does leave your water crystal clear which makes for better viewing.
Have fun!

I would like to give you some background on my Aquauclear 70 for my 20-gallon tall tank. The media I use is the following from bottom to top:
1.) Sponge filter (buy extra and clean/reuse).
2.) Dr. Foster’s Blue Bonded Filter Pad (cut to size/white side down).
3.) Dr. Foster’s Micro Felt pad (cut 1/8” smaller on each length for less flow restriction).
4.) Double up nylon calf stocking with pellet/granular carbon (ends tied and cut).
I found this to be a good setup for my filter. I change the blue pad/micron felt every two weeks. The carbon I change every 4 to 6 weeks (I rotate the carbon bag when I do the filter elements). I also use the Maxi-Jet Prefilter on my intake. The plastic screen that comes with the filter fits over the tapered screen inlet, making it easy to install and remove the filter for cleaning (they do take a lot of debris out before entering the filter)
Hope this helps.

Note: If this is your primary filter for your tank, I suggest buying a backup unit or a replacement rotor assembly…just in case.
