Gnome Glass Skimmers

Morning Chicago Reefs,

So I am still working on my Nuvo 16 build and I am looking for a skimmer that works well but does not become an eyesore and ruin the clean look that I am going for. I borrowed a fellow reefers IM skimmer and I hated it instanly, poorly made and hard to adjust. So searching the forums I came across this little beauty.

My question to my senior members is what size do you recommend? Skimmers are currently available in 32mm short (20cm tall) and standard (25cm tall), 38mm and 44mm diameters. The 32mm is intended primarily for pico and nano aquariums - it may be used on aquariums up to 30 gallons which are lightly stocked, or up to about 20 gallons for more moderate loads. The 38mm skimmer is appropriate to 35 gallons lightly stocked, or 25 with moderate load. The 44mm will handle 45 gallons lightly stocked, or 35 with moderate load.

The deepest point in the rear chamber of the Nuvo 16 is 13". I just can't settle on a size of the skimmer to allow a good contact time and exchange in water flow.

Thanks!

I say go with the 38mm... But this seems like it will be a PITA vs KISS when cleaning the limewood airstones..

Really like the fact that it looks real fancy but also might be fragile.. But over all it should work and have an outstanding foam

Have you looked it the Cad lights skimmers?

I have a little experience with glass!!!! LMAO :drag:

I have read that the glass is the same so knocks and small bangs should not be an issue. Now drops will shatter the lil bugger!

drops will shatter an acrylic skimmer too (but they're easier to glue back together((trust me))). I want one of these for my NC28.

I am at work right now so I can't watch the links that Dre put up. I think I will order one today! and put up a review when I tube it up.

@ Dre, as for the maintence issue. When I first started this wonderful addiction in FW I used to rehab my limewood airstone all the time for my undergravel filters. Heck I still have my Luft pump sitting back in Texas on the 55 gallon angel tank! I may ask the folks to pull the luft off and buy a Tetra! HAHHA

Thanks Dre!

The links are videos of this skimmer in action.... If you are good cleaning everytime than it will be worth a try..

One problem!! Now to replace the limewood airstones when no longer good.. Can you purchase any kind? Just hope these aren't special made just for this skimmer :screwy:

Already have the pump. I would like to buy a used one but I can't trust unknown sellers and glass, to many possibilities. Plus most guys spend hundreds on a LED fixture for small tanks why can't you drop $70 bucks on a skimmer that works well and looks good too. If I had a sump to connected to this build then yea I would go with a acrylic skimmer but I don't.
