Heater help

Hi all,

I had two 300 watt heaters in my 125g and as often happens they BOTH failed this weekend. One got stuck in the on position even though the indicator light never came on and the other one only seems to come on sporadically even when turned all the way up.

I need to buy a replacement and was wondering do I just buy 1 or 2 more standard 300 watt heaters or is there something out there a little more reliable and accurate? Tough especially this time of year when the temperature ranges between 70 during the day and 45 at night.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1x 300 watt would do it. you might also want to look at getting a controller. I plugged my heater into my controller and it turns the heater on/off based on the temp programmed in the controller. When heaters fail, as you found out, they usually fail in the "on" position which is the most common reason why tanks crash. I bought my controller solely for this purpose. All the other features were just "icing" as far as I was concerned.

+1 Eric...or you could get two smaller wattage heaters, and if one fails on the "on" position, it won't be strong enough to over heat the tank, and if it get stuck in the "off" position, you'll have the second one to keep the water from freezing.

Look into a reef keeper lite... Pretty affordable and u can upgrade In the future if u want ... That will be a fail proof for your heater without any upgrades off the bat

So are we talking about a heater controller or something that controls more than the heater? I was looking at something like this:

A full controller will do a bunch of other things too but l use the truetemp and I really like it. Fully digital, remembers settings when unplugged, excellent when you have everything else controlled already:)

+1 on the RKL. After I got one I wont go back, it makes life easier hahaha. Mine controls my lights, heater and ATO. You can Usually find used ones that go for 80 bucks.

Finnex has a $25 heater controller. I bought mine at Premium Aquatics. The heater plugs into it and it controllers the heater and monitors the water temp.
