HELP! Brown/Yellow Hazy Tank..

Came home from a work trip to a brownish/yellow hazy tank. I've only had it installed a month, but it looks like something could have happened to my GFO reactor. My boyfriend said the media wasnt tumbling, so he "turned it up".

I'm getting ready to do a huge water change, but what else should I do? Take live stock out? How much water should I replace? Will I need to start over?

ammonia: 0
nitrate: 0
pH: 8
testing cal, alk, and mag now..

Try running some carbon that will take any contaminates out of the water . What do you have for livestock? Other than the gfo, what other filtration do you have? You said your tank is only a month old, is it all new rock and sand ? It might be cycling

Sorry for the miscommunication, tank is a year old, reactor has only been installed for a month. I use a HOB skimmer and live rock/sand for filtration. Everything is covered in dust. It looks like the GFO media broke down. Livestock includes: a couple sps, a mini carpet nem, dendro, purple firefish, cardinal, and a midas blenny.

Take a turkey baster, as well as your siphon hose, and shoot bursts of water as you're siphoning water out.

GFO reactors are pretty finicky to get "tumbling" correctly. If you check out the Bulk Reef Supply video on GFO and Carbon reactor, they actually give a really good demonstration on how the GFO should "tumble".

Each time I replace my GFO, it takes a bit to get it set right, as I always tend to turn it up too high to start and end up with brownish water.

You should be good though once you have most of the particles siphoned out. Good luck!

I have my gfo feed right into my carbon filtration. Helps keep any fines that do slip out in check. Good luck with the clean up!

Put a magnet in your sump (and anywhere else you can). Gfo is iron.

I mix my gfo with my carbon in my reactor. No issues.
