How many LEDs?

Ok. So I got screwed on the 2 4x54w T5 fixtures I bought so I returned them both. Still really like T5 but if I DIY my own led setup. How many LEDs would I need for good coverage on a 48x24x30"tall tank?

Looking for T5 at the moment but would like to entertain the LED option n see if I can do it on a decent budget.

To add on to this: What optics would Wild need on a 30" deep tank?

I'm also looking into a DIY led setup but for a 6ft 150 @ 28" depth.

I'd recommend 55* or 65* for the RB, B, and CW's that you guys plan to use. A guru on another site said he runs roughly 72 leds on his 300+G (some are XM-L's though), so you can definitely get away with less if planned properly. I'll be running around 64 or so on my 90G (48"x18"x24"), so we'll see how that works. I'd imagine Wild could be around there comfortably, but it also depends on what you're keeping. I'll be keeping a mixed tank. :)

You need a minimum of 72leds with 40* or 60* optics to get a good amount of light+penetration to the sandbed.

Listen to Gus because he's definitely done a few builds, but also a question to ask is what kind of leds are you planning to use? 1W, 3W, 5W, those goofy looking 3-up crees...moar info! ;)

@ Gus, I was talking to Dre a couple of week back and he was showing me the LED you installed into his existing light fixture. I really like that idea and would like to incorporate it into a Current Sun Pod that I just picked up, it has one 150w MH with those cheapo 1w lunar B and W on it. LED's where DOA and it looks like someone all ready went to town trying to fix them. I plan in using the light over a 27g cube from ML. What would you recommend?

It was Fishbeard ;) But Gus also does great work...

Lol,i couldn't remember but the leds can easily be added to your fixture.George might be closer.I'm in zip 60634.You can add 6-12 leds on a driver quite easily and have it tucked neatly inside the fixture :-)

I have no current projects going on so my schedule is all clear. I'd be happy to work on a diy fixture or retrofit if anyone in the area needs help. Heck, maybe we can try out those 5w LEDs on that 30" tall tank. Gus seems to think they are doing well from a previous build he did.

George that is an intresting offer and I will certainly voulenteer my exshisting MH fixture. Is there a shopping list? This weekend I am working and next is St. P day. I may not be in the right state of mind to soder small electrical leads.
