How to solve a problem like resuscitating an escaped fish

i'm not kidding you will, i had one of my guppies at work jump out and get hung up on a cord in the back 2 days ago. i just happened to see a little red spot on the back of the tank and then notice my red male was missing. I reached back and grabbed him and he was there long enough to get stuck to the cord. I just threw him back in (having not yet received this resource) and he is fine now (other than a little missing tail). These animals really are pretty amazing.

I have occasionally, in my 37 years in this hobby. I take the fish & pull it back & forth in the water, getting O2 to flow over it's gills. Depending on how delicate the species is & how long it was out of water, I usually have a 50/50 success rate.

Here is what a did back in Janurary to save my Picasso

After doing this to more fish than I would like to... I find that instead of swishing them back and forth, that I have better success gently holding the fish so its mouth is getting a little jet of highly oxygenated water forced through it from a power head. Sometimes if the subject has stopped breathing I will begin CPR while gently holding the fish. Gently closing its gills and letting the flow open them again.

lol.. Right there with ya Smith!

Good knowledge though, I would have never thought about doing this. I would have plopped it back into the tank and hoped for the best..

Sounds like that works just perfect . A+

I just had a wrasse jump that was out for a while. I cupped him in my hand and slowly moved him back and forth. After a couple of minutes I kind of opened my hand to let him swim out, he swam out a couple of inches then swam right back into my hand. So I swished him a few more minutes and he swam away and has been fine since.

Great info. I think we have all had this happen to us, so it's great to know different techniques to bring them back .
