ID growth on rock

Note the red circled area on the rock.

Intitially, I thought it was a sponge. It is a black mound with white tip. I tried to pick at it with a finger nail, but it won't come loose. It forms mucus nets which is not a bother to me since these nets get loaded with food and then gets tangled on coral which I assume is a good thing.

Checked Wiki. I think that is it. Thanks!

I was thinking that the mucus net would help corals aggregate food, but it seems to be a reef pest.

I tried picking it off with an exacto knife. It was practically part of the rock, but I got some of it off.
