Insights on a Mystery Wrasse

From what I understand, these are quite the coveted and prized fish. I'm wondering why? I saw one recently and the asking priec was well over $100 but too large for my tank. I do like the colors and the unusual look of the fish, and I think I may want one.

Why do folks love this fish?

Not really coveted or prized, but it is a nice wrasse. They hail from the marshal islands where collection and import is not as frequent as say Fiji or Indonesia. They are cryptic fish and may be rarely seen out in the open.

Mine is my favorite fish in my reef but thats because i have one that is inquisitive and always watches what im doing. I have owned some before that would mainly hide and always be afraid of everything that moved. As Eric mentioned they are a little harder to come by than most other normal wrasses so that explains the price over $100, i have never seen one priced lower than that at an lfs(unless it was coral reef and i have my reasons not to shop there). here is a bad picture:

From what I've heard they are aggressive towards other wrasses. I have heard this from both reefers and lfs. If you plan on having more wrasses I wouldn''t recommend it. I've never had one personally but I try to listen. Do some research and you'll see for yourself. It is a beautiful wrasse, indeed I would say one of my favorites as well but I can't pull it from all I've heard. Also give em space to swim as wrasses love to swim! Hope my .02 help.

I keep mine with many wrasses: 3 leopards, red coris wrasse and 2x yellow coris wrasses in 125g. IMO fairy/flasher wrasses are another story...

They are not aggressive and docile for a wrasse. Don't put in a tank with a lined wrasse or the lined wrasse will surely kill it.
