Jason's 100 Gallon Rimless Tank

I am still waiting for my custom light hanging bracket to come in from ModularLED.ca so I can't add any water yet. But I have decided to start experimenting with my aquascape. I took a couple of pics this morning. There is glass glare on the front view so you can't see the right side of the rockwork as well.

I am going to attempt mixed with more of a focus on LPS as I have always liked their look better than SPS.

It is a 36" x 36" x 18" rimless glass cube tank from Glass Cages. The front, left, and right sides are Starphire Glass.

Here is the hardware I will be running on it:
EcoTech Radion XR30W
2 EcoTech MP40W pumps
Mag Drive 7 (return from refugium)
Eshopps 200 Refugium
500W Finnex Titanium heater
Skims 161 Protein Skimmer

I have Miracle Mud in the middle chamber of the Refugium as well as some mangroves.

I have heard of a LOT of people advocating egg crate so that an accidental rock collapse won't shatter your bottom. It shouldn't be an issue on this tank because of how thick the glass is but I am erring on the side of caution.

I will also be putting live sand in once I get the light installed. I just didn't want to weigh it down too much until I am done mounting the bracket since I have to slide the whole tank out to mount the bracket on the stand. Since my favorite fish is a Dusky Jawfish I need the substrate.

I used to say that, now I'm hooked on those darn colored sticks !!

I was wondering why you're waiting to hang your lights to add water? you don't need any light to cycle a tank.

Looks good. I will tell you first hand though. If you are looking to add sand burrowing fish think twice about the eggrate. You will either need a pretty deep sand bad or you will run the chances of your fish getting hurt. You still have the chance so really think about it. I put eggcrate on my tank and to be honest I kind of regret it. Just make sure the rock is stable and you will be good.

+1 on removing the egg crate. I had exactly the same idea when I set up my last SPS tank, and always regretted it. After a few weeks I had cyanobacteria growing on sand where the egg crate was buried. Nowhere else. I had a shallow sand bed and even with regular sand vacuuming I could not get all the detritus that accumulated within all those little squares. Also I found out egg crate leach phosphates. Now with my new tank I just put a sheet of acrylic under my rock structures.Much better.

Thank you for the info about the egg crate. I'm going to pull it out. My favorite fish is my Jawfish and I am not willing to risk his safety. Since the glass is so thick, and the tank is not that deep, the chances of a rock falling hard enough to shatter the glass is nil.

As far as fish I have some fish from my old 150G tank that Matt from Sho Tank Aquariums is taking care of for me while my new tank is cycling. I currently have a Flame Angel, a Dusky Jawfish, an Ocellaris Clownfish, and a Yellow Tail Damsel. I might just give Matt the Damsel as I am not sure that I really want to put it in my new tank.

I am really not sure what other fish I will be able to add in the future. I definitely want to add a Royal Gramma. I have considered adding a school of Chromis but I am not sure on that as I am not a diehard Chromis fan. My wife loves regular Cardinals but I would prefer Bangai Cardinals. I have a serious soft spot for Blue Jaw Triggers but I am not sure if a Trigger would be good in this tank. I like Kole Tangs, Blue Hippo Tangs, Yellow Tangs, and Naso Tangs but I don't know that I can have any Tangs in my tank.

I pulled out the egg crate, mounted the light bracket, and started adding water yesterday. I used a level on the tank before I added the water and it said it was level. Then I added water... Now I need to take some water out and raise the front left part of the tank up 1-3 mm... :(
