I have a 75 gallon with 25 gallon sump with fuge and caulerpa. It's a mixed reef with no sps yet. My salinity temperature and ph is normal . I grow excellent coralline and currently do 10 percent weekly changes with reef crystals. I have .....Kenya tree, hammer coral, few zoas, plays, gsp , Xenia ,acan and a blastos. When I do water changes the KH of the new water is consistently around 11-12 on my test. My tank kh hovers around 6-7 . I dose bio-act if and I've tried kent pro buffer but I can't seem to raise it much higher. If all my corals are happy is this acceptable....
 
7 is natural seawater. The only reason I would say 6 is too low is becasue it doesn't give you much room for fluctuation. If you swing down to a 5 then that would be too low. However if you can keep yourself around a 7-8 then you have a little room to fluctuate in either direction (if it does swing). The alk is not relative to your softies but the acans and blastos will need it. Since you don't have sps, you don't need to be overly concerned. If your alk is low then your pH might be too. You should check your pH. Based on your demand, a weekly wc's should cover your ca & alk needs. Ditch that Kent Stuff and make your own alk supplement with baking soda IF you need it.
 
just pick a number and try to keep it stable/steady. Unless youre doing carbon dosing, then it's ideal to keep your dKH lower around 7-8 to keep your corals happy (SPS especially).

This is 100% accurate. I used to run at 10ppm before I began carbon dosing.
