Larger Zoa Colonies...Im wondering what I am doing wrong...

Every time I get a larger colony of Zoas, they appear to love life for the first week or so, then close up. It doesnt matter if I get a small frag with 3-4 heads on it and let it grow into a larger colony or just buy it.

All of my small frags are doing just just fine, but yet again a colony with 15-20 polyps on it just closed up...

Is there a different placement/flow/feeding/whatever that I am missing the point of???

This is the third time so I do not believe it to be a fluke,

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sand Is where I usually start mine. But the contest zoa went 3/4 way up and in medium flow and doing great. Just gotta play around with them

I like to "dust" my larger colonies off ... Take a turkey Baster and blow them off .. Bacteria forms pretty easy in between the polys

Put them down on the sandbed. Alot of them seem to like the lower lighting.

+1

Also be careful when using chemicals or any carbon dosing.. I know that we want the best and results.. Just do your research 1st IMO

ZnP come and go fast without any warnings.

Thanks all, going to work with these suggestions to see what works for these tanks.

I did read the link...I asked if there was a vitamin c supplement I could add...not carbon.

I do a 20-25% water change every two weeks...

vit c is a carbon source like vodka or sugar (not carbon like the filter media). You might simply try doing more frequent water changes at 10% and see if that helps. Others may differ, but you may be over medicating and it is bothering your zoas. It seems like you might have pretty big swings if you are dosing for two weeks and then reducing those concentrations by 25%.

As I said...wet behind the ears...I assumed it was some sort of carbon filter...

What do you mean by dosing for 2 weeks?

Nope...stock setup except for lighting...

I do dose Kents A and B along with some calcium...other then that lots of coral/invert feeding...

I'm not sure how often you dose these, but if you only change water every two weeks then you are building those concentrations to a point and then reducing them by 25% or so every time you do a WC. I'm just thinking you might be causing a parameter change. Since you are going skimmerless, there is probably a lot building up in there over 10 days-2 weeks. Just my .02
