Quick question while I'm working on my current build. I've dismantled a 6x39W TEK fixture to make a 4 bulb T5 supplemented with DIY LEDs (I'll post a full build thread when finished). As I currently have it setup, I have the power supply (180w 48V 3.75a DC) mounted to the inside of the fixture in the middle. Is it safe to have the power supply attached directly to the metal T5 fixture in terms of conductivity? Or do I need to insulate it somehow with maybe a piece of acrylic underneath it?
For a little more detail, the TEK comes with two power cords going into the fixture that go to an ON/OFF switch and then to the two ballasts for the T5s. I'm keeping one setup as is to power the 4 bulbs, and I was going to use the other power cord to supply power to the power supply. These power cords are grounded to the metal fixture prior to hooking up to the ON/OFF switch and then on to the ballast. That's where I'm a little confused in regards to the power supply mounted in contact to the fixture that the ballast is grounded to. I don't exactly understand the electrical aspect in this part.
And since I was planning on using the original power cord (with the inclusion of the ON/OFF switch) to power the power supply, is it necessary for a ground to be plugged into the power supply's ground terminal? Or is it safe to keep it set up as is with the ground grounded to the fixture?
Here's a pic to hopefully help.
