Lowering Nitrates/Fowlr

I would like to get everyone's input as to lowering nitrates in my fowlr. I have a 155g fowlr, that I admittedly like to overstock. I know wc's will reduce them, as will letting go of some fish, but are there any other options? Vodka/vinegar dosing? Look forward to hearing everyone's suggestions. Thanks.

Vinegar is a nice cheap way to do it. Redsea NoPox also woks. Make sure you have a skimmer if doing carbon dosing

Purigen + Algae Scrubber + Good Skimmer + Basics (frequent WCs and light feedings. Virtually no food ever hits my sandbed). Works for me. I am considering liquid carbon dosing eventually but content for now.

Good luck.

If I ever went back to fowlr, I'd absolutely run biopellets. You get all is the good of biopellets without risk of starving corals.

I do have a skimmer on the tank. Are their any drawbacks to dosing? Will it affect my fish in any way?

Vodka or vinegar will be fine! If you over dose it can take the oxygen out of the water though. One reason why you need a good skimmer.

I'd think bio pellets will be the best option. And like mentioned, you don't have to worry about stripping water of nutrients from fish. I believe Eric(ericthered) ran a FO tank with bio pellets, and he didn't really do water changes.

+3 for BP's.

They do what they're designed to do, extremely well. As Gunner mentioned, you get all the pros and none of the cons. Just make sure you get a decent reactor because I've read some pretty bad reviews on the lower end models back when I was looking into this.

Looks like a reactor is the way to go. Seems easier than trying to keep up on daily dosing. Anyone have any recommendations on reactors?

I've been running a tlf 150 modded for biopellets for over a year. It works well enough that I'm not thinking about replacing it. I know people are picky on their Bp reactors, but I don't understand all the fuss. As long as the tumble and don't stick together, who cares.

Biopellets are awesome for fowlr's, I'd never have one again with them. No need for fuge or dosing! You'll only need to do wc's to collect detritus. I went 6 months without a wc in my last folwr and i only did it because I felt weird not doing one!
