MDA's 10 g nano tank for nursery

With the expected arrival of my first born child, I wanted to set up a tank in the nursery.
Originally my choices were:
1) Nuvo 16
2) Standard 10 gallon tank
3) move my existing 20g tank from the living room into the nursery

So after months of going back and forth with the wife, we finally decided to build the 10g nano tank.
Here is my idea of how I'm planning on setting it up. Please provide me with any feedback that you may have.

- 10-15 lbs of rock
- 1.5" sand
- 50w heater
- Finnex HOB Refugium w/ 40gph pump
- Coral Compulsion 36w Par38 20k Full Spectrum bulb w/ 120 degree optics
- 2x Koralia Nano 425 (one of each side)

Idea for FINNEX for the 3 chambers:
left - chaeto
middle - chemi-pure elite
right - heater

as for livestock:
- sexy shrimp (5)
- yellow clown goby
- (maybe one more top or middle dwelling nano fish)

Thoughts?

I don't know how people normally heat nurseries, just remember that a 10 gallon is going to be less forgiving of heat than a larger tank. So depending on room temperature, it could be a pain to keep it cool.

Otherwise it should be ok.

Good luck with everything.

i would drop the cheato, get a skimmer and a sponge for the filter. i never trusted the chemi-pure. and you need a pair of clowns.

I used a Biocube 14 that I bought used for my son's nursery. I made an egg crate media basket and installed a Rapid LED retrofit. Egg crate media basket doesn't even compare to the Intank media basket I bought later. I couldn't go topless because I have a cat. There won't be heat added to the room. You'll get some beneficial humidity also.

The biggest concern is when they start to crawl and getting access to all the power cords.

My son has Finding Nemo themed nursery with a real Nemo lol.

what was your experience with chemi-pure? Other people seem to swear by it. And are you talking about just a regular sponge like the ones in the Aquaclear? Or something like a carbon filter sponge?

Not sure if I have the budget to drop on a skimmer just yet.

This is my concern too. But I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I'm running chemi-pure elite in my 8g and i have no opinions on it yet. Until i go through the normal diatom/algae shat i wont have any opinion on it lol. I'm also running purigen

they say infant room temp should not exceed 68 degrees so I think that temp should be fine. Thanks for your input.

Danny,
Jackson and Adias room had their own heaters set at 66* and they were swaddled for warmth. Never had a sinus infection, runny nose or flu with them until Jackson started pre school. We thought the room temperature was key to building immune system. Just my opinion.

Chemipure helps with phos and Purigen helps with nitrate. They have both worked wonders for me. In fact, I removed my purigen and my nitrates started creeping up. Both are cheap and worth while. Filterfloss is great too. I don't really understand the nursery tank. Excessive light(can damage your eyes with long term exposure) large amount of water, and outlets, but it is a great way to intrigue positive brain development. You won't have to worry about humidity too much. I'd assume a child wouldn't have a clue till they were 2-3 years old. Good luck and congratulations.

My son was never sick till he went to day care. Now home with me everyday he is ear and eye infection free. No more colds and bruises. He will eventually need to come in contact, but it was one after another. First day.. johnny appleseed decides to sneeze in his face after seconds of being in the room. Game over... Lots of money to only call him in three days a week with a fever... Bottom line. Your kids sick. Keep them home. Again. Gl with the tank.

I have a nem if you want it. Its a white seabae nem. Has purple/blue tips. It is about 3-4 inches in length but i have seen him get a little bigger before. (*insert obligatory "That's what she said"*)

I think it would look amazing with a small anenome or a elegance coral in there. The simplicity of the tank and rock would look super modern.
