Media Reactors

Do you run any type of media reactor on your tank? If so, what do you run in it and do you run it all the time?

I have been reading lots of info on reactors. It seems like a pretty good concept and they aren't too expensive either. Seems like it might be a decent investment. It seems that people usually only run them on larger tanks too. I am looking at running it on my 75gal. My puffer and my lionfish are very messy eaters, so my phosphates in that tank are always a bit high. So, I was thinking about picking up the single reactor from BRS and running GFO in it. I already run phosban in a bag in my sump. Would I see a significant difference with the reactor?

Have you tested for phosphates? What are your readings and when did you test?
The reason I ask is typically PO4 is lower during the day than the night.

Adding phosphate reducing media is putting a band aid solution on the real problem. I believe the best way to reduce phosphates is cut down on feedings and/or more frequent water changes. Run your refugium on a reverse light cycle instead. This will naturally help with the control of PO4 and nuisance algae (if you have any). Chasing an undetectable phosphate reading is a good goal but I don't think its necessity and will come in time through good husbandry.

Media reactors will help with the efficiency of your media but I don't think it will be the solution you're looking for.

I run a GFO reactor all the time, because I'm trying to keep a SPS dominate tank and need to keep phosphate super low. I also run carbon using a reactor.
