Welcome to the community! I guess that the first question should be, what direction are you trying to go with the tank? Do you plan on keeping coral, or is it gonna be fish only?

Welcome to the community.

Alot of people don't use glass tops. It's either no top or a home made screen which is easy to make with parts from menards. Hydrometer is good but a refractometer is way better but isn't absolutely needed.

It seams as off you have a nice 10g nano going per your signature. How's that tank going? Any pictures? What's your experience in this hobby?

I would like to add some coral I would start with the easy to care for as I slowly read more .why is it that most tanks I see have no top what about jumpers.which protein skimmer would be good for a 40 .I got a gift card for my b day from petco n the only ones in store are the sea clone and a coral life one .the nano is doing good had it up a few months I'm still learning how to use forum but I would love to post pics .

Are you running a sump or just Hang-on-back (HOB) components?
Many say that crushed coral is going to cause you a problem, but I have no experience with it.
You don't want/need a bubbler (Skimmer does more than enough of that), but you might consider using the petco credit for something other than the skimmer since they don't really have a great selection (IMO anyway). You might check out bulkreefsupply or aquacave for a better selection (for HOB I love my Reef Octo BH1000, for in sump I am happy with my SC-65)
Live rock should be about 1lb per gallon.
We would need to know more about your lights for making stocking suggestions, but softies and LPS. If you have enought LED, you could probably eventually have anything you want.
Bulk reef supply also sells plastic mesh and DIY screen top kits.
The hydrometer is probably ok, but you will most likely want a refractometer.
I hope that helps!

There are alot of bad reviews on the sea clown, but I had one and thought it worked fine. Pretty sure you can mod one to work better. I found it brand new on the Petco website for $8, so couldn't really go wrong.

Hi frank,
welcome to the forum. what kind of leds do you have ??

it all depends on the lighting you have and then it comes to the fish selection depending on corals you are going to have

Patience is the Key, wait and wait, find some good deals for corals and fish on here and on supporter sites aswell

goood luck :)

Yeah, $8 bucks. I ordered 6 of them and sold the others on ebay a while back. Don't know what the deal was with the price, but I ordered them and they came the next day.

Modding one for $8 I can see. Paying retail at Petco for one, no way. That thing was a hunk of crap and very loud. I bought one from Amazon so I was able to return it.

IMO, I would use the Petco credit on livestock, substrate, and salt mix. Except for livestock and food wait for sales. Petco has a good mark up on stuff.

Super thanks to every one that's helping out .I have not yet put any parts to use its all still sitting in the box just tryin to put all the pieces together as I keep reading n practice keeping up with my nano .so I will look into a better skimmer and I was wondering about the sump are they a must or can I play with that later plus what size sump and I heard of turning the hob filter to a refugium which would be better .sorry know I ask alot but what better place then here.

wow my pics look horrible but thats my 10 g nano.thanks for the feed back.i really look forward to this forty build and putting all this advice to good use.please kep it coming im all ears.

All Petco's treat EVERY tank with copper. It's a corporate position. This includes coral/invert tanks as well. They are horrible to their livestock, don't feed properly as a cost mechanism (meaing they feed the cheapest possible food source, whether the fish will take it/dont, and very few of their employees actually knows anything about salt systems. You will find individuals with knowledges, but as a company, they treat their livestock like $hit.
