Reef tank at college....?

Hello all, I haven't been on here in awhile. Been very busy with school, football, and college applications.

So here's whats up:

My nuvo 16 was doing great and I was getting pretty into the reef keeping hobby. Then I went on vacation, my heater broke, and I lost all my fish and inverts...

I was debating whether or not I should even spend lots of money on getting the tank all set up again because in the fall, I'll have to figure out a way to take it to college(which will suck) or just sell it.

So my question is, does anyone have any experience keeping tanks at college? Would a smaller, pico tank be easier to be kept at college?

Thanks for reading :) let me know what you think

Alex

I think similar would apply to any of the people with office tanks. There are a few of those on here, let's hope they can chime in. :D

Agreed, speak up guys ;)

Mostly I'm worried about moving it back and forth...

If you live in a dorm you will need to find out first what the gallon limit is or if there even is one. I would consider something like the new Fusion 10, takes up minimal space, square corners, and looks incredible. The nuvo 16 and 24's have issues with the corner bends cracking. With that in mind I would not want to transport it and then have something happen after transporting it due to their inherent weakness.

Most colleges have a 25 gallon limit. But I was thinking something smaller than my nuvo 16... Fusion 10 looks awesome

I had an Evolve 8 in my office before I moved this summer....moved it twice in a month and all it took was a 5 gal bucket for the water and livestock and a bag/box for the equipment....easy as it gets ;)

Did you ever have any problems with the livestock getting bashed around? Another concern of mine is killing my livestock every time I have to move the tank

I'm looking at my 20G on my dorm dresser right now! Easy access to clean water is a must, otherwise you will NOT do water changes. Otherwise, it's not too hard at all. It'll make your room a hotspot for people to come to, too. :)

Do you take it home for all breaks or just summer?

Winter break starts next week, and I'm breaking it down for that. Might just go FW Amazon next semester. We'll see.

I had a 5 gallon in my dorm and one year a 60 gallon (convinced my RA it was only 25 gallons), but you just have to be courteous and make sure it's silent. You don't want to pissed of your roommate! A years a long time!! But it was certainly doable. My junior year I had a 5 gallon barebottom rimless. I just used a par 38 bulb and HOB filter. I ran mostly zoas, and I also used my RKE and MP10WES from my old tank.

But you could do a very nice softie LPS tank with just a par38 and hob. You'll also quickly learn how fascinated people are with it, especially the ladies!

So what do u guys think about tank size... Should I sell my nuvo 16 and look for something smaller? Or keep the nuvo 16

I'd keep the nuvo 16 I only ran the 5 gallon because I had it laying around. Otherwise I would have done something a bit larger.

no....it's not like your going to have tons of corals in a Pico sized tank....you can bag up any coral you want to given they're prolly not that big to begin with and transport them separately...again, an Evolve 8 does't house that much overall, but just enough for you to enjoy at college... ;)

What inverts and fish did you have in yours? Any recommendations on less sensitive critters?

I bought the wife the Fusion 10 for Christmas, she doesn't know yet. Ordered her the Nanobox Mini Tide w/ Storm Controller today as well. Compared to the older round cornered tanks IM makes, the Fusions are the way to go. IM really needs to make all their tanks like the Fusions and just stop with the rounded corners. I speak from experience, I've owned 3 different Fusion 30L's, the nuvo 24, now a Fusion 20 which I will gut and drill to be sumped as soon as my 105 is up and running.

What do you think of the 18watt skyye light that comes with the 200$ package? Should I go for that or try and find my own nano light?

Honestly I don't really care for the limited led's and no controllability for dusk/dawn. The Kessil a160w is out and is controllable now, if you want one of those I know a brick and mortar that will get them in this week, I have 1 on reserve. The Kessil a160w will run you $240 for the light, plus gooseneck and dropdown another $60, and the Kessil Spectral Controller $100. So that's $400. You could get the Maxspect Razor Nano for $289 and it's controllable but I'm not impressed with the nano versions LED's. There is the Maxspect Celestial for $229. The Nanobox Mini Tide comes with choice of mount, colors, and Storm Controller for $300.

As a student I definitely will not have that much money to throw around on lights :) . I'll probably have to find used ones or DIY
