Running without a filter sock

I am totally in the same quandry Will. Keeps the sump a little cleaner, but it executes pods and stinks to clean. I want to ditch it, but I also like the idea of keeping bits of stuff from flying around the tank. I was even going to go with intermittent, but it's such a PITA I want to just drop it and move on. I'd also love to hear some of the experts weigh in.

I stopped using mine also...got tired of it overflowing. Can't tell the difference with it on or off.

They are good for certain things and will also cause issues down the road.

It will polish the water real nice, keeps air bubbles going into DT when present, keeps your sump clean and prevents snails or other harmful things that might damage a pump. Good for catching unwanted things back into the sump or DT.

Now if not changed on a regular routine will cause a big NO3 and phosphate increase!

Keeps PODS from making love and will never meet that Latin lover in the fuge

Is it really worth a load of water to clean these every week and add more $$ to keep buying them?

I use to buy them like candy for my sump.. Now I don’t use filter socks and has helped with my NO3 problem.

Yeah, me too. The other issue was the buildup of nitrates if you didn't clean them often enough. My setup is already being scrubbed with a skimemr rated up to 120 gallons so a sock would be overkill. My coral and tank need to eat the little nasty bits or it would starve. Filter socks will pull out the pods we all want to keep in our tanks.

If you run without filter socks............... wont your filter feet get cold and dirty this time of year??

i use mine for skimmer return now only in 90 gallon and one for my gfo return and ato pipe and return of my edge i have plumbed in all to one sock . i just take em throw em in washer without soap and the spin cycle drys em not very hard to clean and never had issues. i can see them not being good for coral tank for sure though if corals arent fed regularly

Good question Will and thanks all for these responses. I think I'm going to try not using the filter clothe in my wet dry and keep an eye on my phosphates and see if this helps bring those down.
