sand from the beach

so my parents went on vacation and my mom decided to fill a large ziploc bag at the beach and bring it home to me to put in my tank since when she left i hadnt set it up yet. is it safe to use this sand in a tank at all?

That could quickly wipe out your entire tank. You have no idea what kinds of poisons or hitchhikers are in there. I say don't do it.

i figured. i already have my tank going through a cycle so wasnt going to take the time to tear down and start again.

Years ago.."Live sand" sold in stores was actually sand taken from the sea. I believe the practice might have been outlawed or they decided it was just easier to take clean dead sand and squirt some bacteria in it and sell it as "live", which is what we buy today. The thing about using your p's is that it was probably taken close to the shore, where all the crap washes up. I would be worried it was polluted.

The ocean works like a protein skimmer, all the crap is washed in with the foam.
