skimmer

Hello all,

First post so please be kind...

I'm planning on setting up a 125 gallon salt/reef tank with fish and LPS corals.

I'm confused as heck with protein skimmers, I figure reef octopus is great for what I need. But which one? looking for some recommendations on which one to go with Classic? Space Saver? I just don't know...

If budget is an issue, get the SCA-303 (Bubble Magus Clone). It is a fantastic skimmer. If budget is not an issue, I would also be looking at the new Aquamaxx cones (if you can find them in stock). The JNS cones that Big Al's sells are identical (Aquamaxx is JNS) so you may be able to find one there.

I am a big asm fan, look for a g3 and you will be rocking. Can find used for cheap on cmas. You can skimp on a lot of stuff but you shouldn't on a skimmer.

Thanks all, I don't have a sump(yet), but heck, I don't even have a tank yet.

I think those aquamaxx cones might be the way to go, I like the smaller footprint

I see the CO-3 is rated for 500 gallons, but my planned tank will be 125, does that not seem like overkill??

I am willing to spend the money to do it right but....

Is the CO-1 just plain not good enough? CO-2 ??

Just looked up those skimmers, pretty nice. I am a fan of big skimmer body, more contact time.

I'm amazed no one said "Reef Octopus".. But I have to admit that there is allot of hype with these aquamaxx skimmers over on RC and good ones

RO skimmers are nice, but at the current moment the ones that compete with Aquamaxx are overpriced, and the budget friendly ones are outskimmed by SCA skimmers. They'll fall back in line shortly though.

i was looking for that co 3 for months bwefore i GAVE UP. i went hydor preformer 1005 on my new swet up. Works great. i need to shut it off cause it spends only and hour or so actually pulling skimate

found this skimmer on fleabay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bubble-Magu...005895369?pt=Fish_Filters&hash=item19d8778ac9

seems like a steal but I don't want to waste money.... just to have to upgrade in 6 months. remember this will be for a 125 with corals(no SPS) and some fish.

I also realized that my stand only has about 24.5" from the base to the top of the door opening. maybe 2 more inches above the door, so kind of tight. this one has a 22.64" height, but some are at 24".

Oh, and my sump will have a 12"x15" section for the skimmer

I don't want to say price is not an issue, because it is, but I'd rather spend a dime now than a nickel now and a dime later...if you catch my drift.
