Smart Things as a Controller

Has anyone considered using Samsung's SmartThings as a controller of sorts? I'm making my dumb house a smart house, and with all of the third party hardware and open source code, it seems that you could probably do nearly everything a controller can do? Some of the things it can do:

Water detection
Programmable power outlets
Camera control
Motion detection
Alarm notification
 
I was reading up on it last month. When i was looking for sensors for my ecobee3. So with the samsung smart things i also saw the controller ability. But that was a short small thought
