Stingray

I am building the 400 gallon monster under the thread "My Tanked Tank".

I am considering making it a stingray tank but there is no ray discussion thread.

Can anyone give me some insights on keeping rays?

There's a guy on RC name I can't remember exactly, something like "salty51". Lives in morris I think. He had a ray pond in his basment. Try looking him up, he seemed really knowledgeable with rays.

Get fine sand, really good filtration, and a whole bunch of shrimp for food. Cownose rays are super friendly so theynwouldbe a good choice. Im not sure if they can have lr/ corals as it could cut them so if you do get lr make tall columns so there isnt anywhere the ray can swim over the rock, good luck!

Believe it is salty51 that lives in Morris and has a ray pond in his basement.

I kept two Cali round rays for a few yeas, they are cool and definetely have a personality. One issue to be aware is being limited on tank mates...angels, triggers, puffers, all not a good idea. I kept several tangs (unicorn, naso, and vlamingi) with no issues.

Mario at Aquatica has rays in fairly often..he is a great resource.

MCF might be able to help. They have at least one in their look-down tank.

The ones at MCF died! They suctioned themselves to the top of the filter (i think its a filter...it was an open pipe that brings water in from the surface)

Their shark also jumped out of the look down :(

NO to puffers and the nem...puffers will eat the rays eyes and the nem will sting the puffer.

If you want to seriously keep rays, call Mario at Aquatica...he talked me out of spending lots of money on other fish I wanted to keep with the rays.

Btw..the shark at MCF came from my tank..it was sad to see him die..would have thought their tank was the perfect upgrade for him.

What kind of rock or accoutrements can I put in tank? I was going to use all my fake plants left over from freshwater.

a ray is going to constantly dig up (bury itself in) the sand, so nothing that goes on the SB. Also, be careful with FW fakies. They sometimes have metal in them and that could wreak havoc with a ray's magnetic thingys (lorenzos glad or something? someone will science this up for me)

What Pufferpunk said! I had mine for nearly 2 yrs with very similar arrangement as mentioned above and rays appeared to thrive as they grew over the two year period.
Fish and other tank inhabitants kept with the rays w/out issues:
-larger tangs (non-aggressive) such as Naso, Vlamingi, Unicorn
-Eels
-Starfish
- Lionfish

Must remember that rays are slower eaters need to be sure they are getting food off bottom.

Roger that, what I have is no metal. Wouldn't allow it in FW either.
