Tang information

I have been reading the older posts on Tangs and the tang police. I have a 70 gallon tank that is 36 x 18 x 25 Tall, I have a yellow tang in there currently. If there another tank that I could put in the tank with him or are they to territorial to add another tang now? I really like the look of the bristletooth tangs and would like to add one to the tank.

Thank you,
David

Generally, you can keep multiple tangs in that size tank as long as they are different body shapes. Like your yellow tang has the long snout, but a hippo tang or naso has a rounded face. You can't keep similar body shapes in that size, so the bristletooth is not a good idea....

Yellow tangs can be very territorial and mean. My yellow is one of my meanest fish, but every fish is different. It would have helped if you introduced them at the same time.

I keep a kole and a blue in my 55 (110 will be set up next year tang police, they are both less than 2") and they are doing fine. It's always a gamble, but like I said, different body shapes make the difference, if they are the same body shape, they'll fight to the death.

ok so if I replace the yellow tang can I go with a Two Spot Bristletooth Tang and a Bristletooth Tomini Tang since it looks like one has a long snout and one looks more round face?

Thank you for the quick responses,
David

Those are both incredibly similar though... And I think both technically long snouts... You need a bigger variance. Like a naso to a bristletooth, they almost don't look like they could be related, but when you have the tomini and the bristletooth, sometimes you can't see a difference at first glance.

The naso is awesome looking, but I read it is 180 gallon tank minimum. I would have to decide between the naso and my wife and the answer differs from day to day.

No, I wasn't trying to push the naso, but rather push that the two need to look very different from each other. The two types of bristletooths are too similar, and they'd end up duking it out. I was just making a point, not a recommendation of tank mates, lol.

got it. I think my dream of two tangs has come to an end. Ben, I got the point, I was just checking my facts on tank size since you mentioned the naso twice. I really appreciate the fast and informative responses.

Thank you,
Davd

No problem. I keep two in my 55 and they are super happy in there. I think I might try for a 3rd in the 110... but I like playing with fire ;)
