I did this for my 180 and the two MP40's are good for an SPS tank, preferably a 3rd would put me right in the sweetspot for SPS, which I eventually plan on getting.

Where is that sweet spot in a 180?

according to the link, if you are keeping SPS, they suggest 3 MP40's (i'd assume two on the ends and one on the back glass), but even with two, it's in the acceptable range.

I wonder what variables they use to calculate what LPS or SPS flow should be. Is it purely based off of tank volume?

Im pretty sure its just based on gallons and gallons/hr capability of each vortech.
It asks for lxwxh, but im pretty sure thats only to calculate gallons.

The thickness is just to tell you which vortech you can put on that thickness.
