Triton Method Discussion Thread

Thought I'd start a thread for those of us who are using Triton Method where we can share tips and tricks we found along the way.

I know Matt is another member using this method wasn't sure if there were others.
 
As of the 21 of this month I'll be full force with my system, the only thing I am doing diffrent is going with a bigger sump they say got 20%of you tank volume but I am doing a 1 to 1 with mine in hops that I'll not be using any type of mechanical filtration in the long run.
 
I'm interested in this method as well. I guess I have been using similar principals for years - no filter sock, large fuge, only using small bag of carbon when needed, and Alk 7-8. The difference in my system is that the skimmer is in the first chamber, then the fuge so I guess it's not 100% Triton. I had issues for years keeping nutrients in the system because the DSB in my display combined with the DSB in the fuge and all the macroalgae was too good at removing nitrates / phosphates. I removed the DSB in the fuge recently and upgraded to a good LED grow light, and am having a lot better results lately. I'm still doing water changes, but only about 10% weekly. I sent in my first test to Triton recently and everthing was good except for high lithium and iodine. I think that was from a trace element supplement that I have been dosing so I stopped that. I don't know if I will go whole hog in on all the Triton products yet, but I really like and agree with the concept.

So for my system I have a 120 Gallon Display, 21 Gallon frag plumbed into a 40G Breeder. Fuge is 20% of my display, with a DIY Full SpectrumRapid LED for lighting set at 50%, then goes into my Skimmer section which only fits my skimmer, then the return pump which is about 6" wide.

The 4 bottles are being controlled by my 2 DOS Pumps and I'm dosing 7.5ml each day of the bottle.

Right now my alk hovers between 7.8-8.2, not easy to test with the color change ones since I am a little color blind.

One thing I found helpful is having a powerhead in my fuge, I want to add 1 more and have them alternate since currently some of my macro algae will get stuck on the powerhead. This helps keep the detrius suspended so that the skimmer or SPS can get to it.

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to keep the algae off the glass while it's not too crazy I am doing a quick clean every other day with my algae magnet.

Only thing I'm not found of is that the water isn't crystal clear since there is no filter sock so you do see small particles in the tank now and then. My SPS seems happy so I'm ok with it. Just loved my crystal clear water I had before...lol

What about adding filter floss just b4 the return pump to help with clean the water calum What unwanted debri
 
from all the research I've done it seems you want the particles because it helps feed your corals, so you don't want it to get flossed or filtered.
 
I installed the green housing Taotronics LED from Amazon about a month ago and I would say my chaeto growth rate has at least doubled over a hardware store 5k LED. Also it is deep green and very healthy. My Ph now stays higher and more stable at night during my reverse cycle. Well worth the money.
 
I know this is an older post, but im starting to look into this method and building a refugium to get rid of my bio-ball setup.

Those that have posted here, is the Triton method still working as well as you have hoped?

Anything you'd do differently or tweak?

I still run it amd.get great growth. I just upgraded to a 210 so still dialing it.
