Upgrade: 29 to 55 bb

Okay, so I've had my 29 gallon tank for over 13 years now... Still holding up like a champ. However, tank has been rebooted about 4 times and the glass is scratched like someone rubbed sandpaper allover it.... Plus I need more room.

My question... I'm upgrading to a 55 gallon. No long drive or anything. New tank is going to be literally across the room. But I'm switching from a 3" sandbed to a bb tank. I know this can cause a cycle which is a no no in my sps dominated reef. What are some things I can do to avoid it? Buy some cured live rock to make up for it?

Gracias

Mike are you only transferring over the rock and coral or will you be adding more rock to the new display tank. What I would do if you are adding more rock is to seed it with some LR from your tank and make sure the new rock is fully cycled before moving anything over. If it is just a straight transfer and the only difference is going to be a bigger tank and no sand, I would just do 10% waterchanges a day until the new tank is full (keep a heater and powerhead going). This way your new DT will match the old one with water parameters. Then before transferring everything over I would give each rock a good shake to get rid of as much detritus as possible. Keep your feeding down for the first couple weeks just to make sure your bacteria is full strength to prevent any possible cycle, but I don't think you should have any especially if you are leaving the sand behind. Old sand can cause a problem when stirred up. Remember that a new tank means new flow and new lighting (intensity), so it might take some time for your SPS to get used to it. GL, I am sure you will get some more good advice and I really don't think you need to worry unless you are adding a bunch of new things to the new tank, in which case just go slow adjusting your corals to the new environment.
