Well, well, well, who is on a well?

Howdy folks. I'm just settling into my new (1985) house. We just had the well serviced/chlorinated and the tank balanced. I have also had the softener system evaluated and it definitely needs to be replaced. I've had bids from Angel and a plumbing company for a couple of different systems, but I am curious what you other well swilling reefers have done. I have a BRS 5 stage plus RO/DI, but I am afraid I'll be tearing through the single DI stage pretty badly if I just go from the softener to the RO/DI. I know whole house RODI is feasable, but we definitely don't want that little drinking water faucet thingy. There is a very interesting system called a chlorinator that actually adds and then completely removes chlorine to kill off all of the sulphur and iron eating bacteria. Right now the water smells like camp and the TDS is 987.

Softened water is easy on the membrane because you are removing sodium instead of heavy metals. Definitely get a booster pump to maximize membrane efficiency to help with saving on DI.

I had nasty well in the beginning. We had softened water, but not where I had the RODI setup. I just went with it, wasn't too horrible. Maybe just double up your DI stage, and like Tbone said, get a booster pump. If you want to clean up the water for the rest of your house, just look into a whole house taste/smell filter (carbon)...

in regards to your well water. we have been using a hydrogen peroxide dosing system along with the other typical softening equipment for about 2 years now and it works great at removing the iron. highly recommend it and it's actually a very simple concept.
as for the r/o for the fish i use 2 75 gpd membranes and dual stage di resin on my unit. i go through more resin than others but its not that bad considering i go from 900+tds to 0. booster pump is a must as well.

also recommend a smart head for the softener, we only use about 25 bags of salt per year because it's so precise.

use cta membranes they last longer on well water
and double down on the cannisters like 2 carbon, 2 sediments, then rotate them
++ on the hydrogen peroxide system for whole house

there is a some business's that will test your water for free then try to sell you their system, then diy it if your handy.
