anyone using biopellets. if so do u run gfo as well?. I currently use ecobak pellets in my smr1 reactor and carbon in the other reactor. also is there any use for macro algae. I currently dont have any in my tank anymore. is this bad?

I'm running ecobak and the tank seems to love it. I just finally started back up GFO after 3 months of gradually bringing my pellets up to the full quantity. I noticed a significant drop in chaeto growth once my pellets were at 100% and fully seeded. What I do have now has not receded and is still growing but only a little bit each week, nothing like before when I was starting with the ecobak. It gives all the microfauna a place to thrive so I just leave the chaeto in the sump.

The pellets may or may not control your phosphates. I run biopellets and use a little gfo mixed in with my carbon. I also got rid of my chaeto a year and a half ago without any issues, so it is not bad to not have any. In fact, I recently went through an issue were my sps were fading due to LACK of nutrients in the tank. I doubled my feeding and increased my amino supplementation...now all is good and my sps are vibrant again :)

I only discontinued GFO use when starting up with bio pellets because that was one of the recommendations given while researching the safest way to introduce the pellets to the system. Would it have made a difference if I kept running GFO the whole time? Maybe, maybe not. I didn't mind cleaning the glass every couple of days but now after the fact I do appreciate the glass not needing cleaning as frequently anymore since reintroducing the GFO to my reactor system.

I just started my system. its been about 3 weeks now. slowly noticing the algae. dont have any gfo running . should I run it or just keep introducing the pellets slowly untill 100% and then run gfo

Ok, just follow what Fishbeard did... You should be alright ;) Also you don't have to be at 100%, IMO once you see good results stop adding.. BP will clean the tank so good that you might start seeing issues like ETR did. You can always increase as your bioload builds.

;)

I did the same thing in the beginning. i only went to gfo later after I saw that the bp's didn't take care of all my phosphates.
