Zoelites + mulm = hokey?

Any zeolite users sans additives?

I can't shake the feeling that it's a bunch of hokey.

Mulm in a reactor is essentially denitrifying bacteria. Same as you would accumulate on any mechanical filter/media. Shaking the mulm just redistributes the bacteria in the system mechanically. However, you would not have the concentration in the reactor if you didn't run it the first place. The bacteria would have colonized elsewhere to handle the average bio load.

Perhaps, it is a consumable carbon source like biopellets. Otherwise, it is your typical "bunch of rocks" which can only be differentiated by porosity.

What confuses me is that this mulm has been described as a food source which I find dubious. I would like to hear from more knowledgeable users. Perhaps, it produces some biological matter for SPS.
