Purple bonzai polyps

So I have a nice frag of purple bonzai that I've had for 2 weeks now , I've noticed that the polyps are only fully out at night with the lights out ? They will be just barly sticking out when lights are on ? I'm running 3 250w Hamilton 14k single end metal halide bulbs , I originally had it up higher but it is now in the middle , tank size is 180 .. Parameters are all good with the exception of mag a little high and po4 about .06

What would make this do this ?

Thanks

Mine I can't get to color up right , it's high in the tank with really purple tips but the base is real pal and won't color up

I have heard from alot of people that they get better coloration from Bonsai acros when they are not getting too much light. maybe lower them down and wait a few days/weeks to see if color get's better.

From my understanding anything pale is too much light and anything in the browner shades is too little light

But some species are known to like high light and would be pale in the beginning but as time passes by they color up beautifully, bonsai isn't one of the high light loving corals though so move it lower till you see the color you like but wait atleast 2 to 3 weeks before moving it again

Thanks for the tip there is no moving it now , I'll try to frag a PC and put it lower

Polyps should be out during day unless there is too much light or flow or there is a fish that's might be nipping at it. Mine are always fully open during a day. If you don't suspect any fish bothering it ( any angels in your tank?) I would move it in a different location away from direct light and keep it there for couple of weeks, see how it react. Corals being pale doesn't always mean too much light, usually not enough nutrients in water.

now here is the debate : Colaaddict states this is normal ? I would think most polys should be open during the day ????? I have moved mine down and over a little bit , ill leave it there for a few more weeks , if the same continues ill move it further down ?

Lets say after a month of moving ( in tank for month / half ) polyps still dont open during the day .... Anything i can try to stimulate to open ? Its a beautiful coral and hate to waste those polyp extensions at night only !

If you feed some sort of micro-food, most sticks will have their polyps out and waving all throughout the day. My food of choice is Bulk Reef Supply's Reef Chilli. ;)

But his polyps are partially out during the day and all out during dark, which is normal. You can observe your tank while its dark that polyps are always longer when lights turn off.

correct , my piece is only about 1" frag with a few small nubs starting to branch ... I can see where all the polyps are and the bright green spots , but they just barely stick out , at night they are completely fully open , ill see how it does now that i moved it down a bit ?
