i would suggest getting a cosmetus wrasse like jaime said.. they are great pest control fishies.. i have one in my tank and it inspects everything in my tank.. Hes like the TSA in my aquarium
Where does one get a cosmetus?
cosmetus wrasse====they can get mean. I had one and it started chasing everything all of the sudden. Really going after everything smaller than him. They are nice looking fish thoughh and I never ever had or seen a pest when I had him.
I am sorry to see you going through this because, I myself believe I'm going through this. I found a frag about 3.5 weeks ago, with "bite marks" and what I thought was eggs, but upon dipping I saw no adults like you have there..... I'm praying I found the one coral, but google'ing and looking at others, I'm suspecting we're both in deep crap.
My frag tank and QT are cycling now, and would love to chat about your experiences. From what I have seen, basting, using wrasses are NOT a long term solution and will not solve our problem(s). I'm assuming I have them, although I haven't seen evidence like what you have.. I'm praying maybe I misdiagnosed. I have a melanurus and two yellow wrasses, but don't expect them to fix you.
We also have corals from similar sources, so would be curious to chat if there are links. I have a lot of nice SPS in my DT, but likely will never be able to sell them directly out of there because of always having that chance of AEFW, so everything will get cut form DT, move into QT, then into frag tank...
Sucks, but I am seeing AEFW threads everywhere now all of a sudden.. Don't rely on wrasses, that will NOT fix this problem.
I was basting the detritus off of my Palmer's a few weeks ago and saw what looked like a flatworm fly off of it. My trigger promptly ate it so I was unable to inspect it. Then, for the last few weeks, my corals have actually looked really good. Last night, I was moving a milli that wasn't places in an ideal location and I saw unmistakable bit marks on the bottom side. Then I began basing everything. Tons of them came off of a pink milli. A couple off of my green slimer. A couple off of other corals. My triggers and even my two clowns ate all of them.
As for where they came from, I'm not worried about it. It is my responsibility. I have always dipped with melafix but it clearly doesn't do the job on aefw. I'm not even worried about selling stuff. I just don't want all of my coral to die.
I'm going to do the Bayer dip process, but I don't have high hopes for for my acro survival.
Oh well, tank reset. I still have a decent amount of non-acro sps.
Don't give up, they can be beaten it just takes some work. Bayer dip kills the adults, or at least stuns them into submission and then you just need to dip until the eggs and their life cycle is disrupted. I'm hoping I may have gotten lucky and did just that. Whenever my frag tank gets up, I'm going to start moving copies of everything in there as backup, but if I need to, yea an acro reset will be in order.. I'm praying that's NOT the case.
After reading your thread, I started basting my acros this morning and still nothing is coming off of them.. I don't know if I'm just very lucky to have caught it when I did, or naive in thinking I got that lucky.. Time will tell.
I would take those two colonies out and inspect for eggs at the bases although they can get around in the tank thet usually stick around on the colony till it dies. Of course they can get blown by power heads but u can improve your chances by finding the main source . They seem to love millies idk why its not a hopeless battle but is very time consuming good luck manI was basting the detritus off of my Palmer's a few weeks ago and saw what looked like a flatworm fly off of it. Remember, you cannot dip the smooth skin acros, just have to QT them.
I don't understand Nino, dip in what? I've had anything die in bayer, but I don't have near the LE .02 as you.
I have heard people successfully dipping smooth skinned acro in Bayer. I've killed a bunch of smooth / deepwater acro with other dips.
