drilling a 10 gallon tank

Hi has anyone been able to drill a 10 gallon tank? I have a spare 10 gallon tank I would like to drill a 1 1/2 bulkhead and attach the tank to my sump? anyone willing to drill for me? I wont be heartbroken if the tank cracks lol

Most of them are tempered and will crack when drilling. I have found a few of them that are not tempered and I used a 1/2" glass drillbit from menards to drill the hole. I was always concerned after drilling that the glass is so thin it will not tolerate a bump but never really had an issue.
 
If your 10G has a tempered pane it would probably be the bottom one but I don't think most small tanks are tempered though. I got my drill bit from Amazon ($6?) but it's not the size you want. Drilling is easy. Go slow, use water and be patient. GL
 
Let's keep this on track please. It's not a thread asking to buy a tank. It's asking how to drill an existing one.
 
It can be done but they crack easier gotta go slow barely no pressure u can get the drills off ebay too just dont drill to close to edge like i said they r thin glass and crack easy lol
 
is it worth going to lowes, etc and spend $2-3 bucks on a small piece of glass to practice drilling a hole in? Granted 10G are only$10 at petco sales.
 
Thanks I'll probably give it a shot once I get my hands on the drill bit. I'm just looking to add in to my sump so I can place a return pump it there. I have 24x15in space left. I might just find a cheap sump.
 
There was also another tank for free with 3 holes drilled in the side. I think a 10 or 15 gallon. Wouldn't be hard to plug the 2 you don't need. Or just get the bit and drill really slow on your tank. Barely put pressure on the side of my 10 with my hand and shattered the whole piece

Drilling isn't as hard as it seems. Go slow use a lot of water. I used a really nice drill guide and used the weight of the bit to drill. One thing I would recommend is hold the drill steady when you are getting close because if you move the drill at the end you may chip off some glass. No matter what you'll have a bulkhead so the chipping isn't that bad.
 
I've drilled 10G tanks before I wouldn't go any bigger than 3/4" hole anything bigger will crack for sure. Also when installing the bulkheads be careful tightening to much pressure can also crack the tank. I went through 3 tanks before getting it right....
