Gyre vs WAV

Setting up a 150g cube tank, thinking about what circulation pumps to get. Gyre is cheaper but i have an apex controller and Icecap makes a module that works with apex so total price on the is about $395. Or I can go with the neptune WAV's starter kit comes with 2 circulation pumps and the module for the apex. Does anyone have the WAV's is it better having 2 pumps vs just 1 Gyre? So torn, its quite a bit of money either way, but wouldnt be opposed to spending the 105 more if the WAVs were that much better.

following along...i been debating the same thing for a 75 gallons 4 foot tank.

I think I will go with Gyre for the cost saving and use its own controller instead of hooking it up to Apex. The Gyre is unique in the way it pushes water. The Wav looks like any other circulation pump out there. I also like having a Gyre on one side only instead of having pumps on both side of the tank.

It depends what coral you are keeping. I don't think either of those pumps will be sufficient for a cube like yours. The gyre is made for longer tanks and the WAV would probably need some help hitting deadspots.

Even with 2 of them? What would you suggest then?

Oh I didn't see the starter kit was 2 pumps. Neptune always comes out with the best stuff but it's usually pretty pricy. You can get away with spending half as much on Jebaos and still get just as good flow. They even have Jebao - Apex adapters to control your pumps through the apex.

So.... I have had a Gyre for a while. I have it on my 180. I also have MPs on a couple of other tanks. While I like the gyre and the way it moves water... I am not sure I would ever get another one. It seems like the smallest of debris or smallest snail jams the thing up. I have gone through 4 sets of replacement paddles and even got new ones shipped by the mfg... The paddles have broken, striped or just plain came apart. I have never had this problem with the vortecs or koralias.

I have 2 xf130s on my 90 with the apex controllers and prefer them to the mp40s I used to run. No durability or clogging issues for me, but they do need to be cleaned more often than vortechs. I think the flow the gyres generate is a lot more natural, and less hotspots than typical pumps. Also really like the controllability with the apex interfaces.

I have three of the gyres in my tank and love them over the MP60s that they replaced. I haven't had any issues that others have had with broken paddles, but I don't have many snails in my tank. The paddles are fragile, so I don't doubt that this occurs. There are HD paddles that Maxpsect is coming out with to help in that respect. Despite the size, the gyres "disappear" in my tank due to the ability to place them near the surface of the water, or in a corner. I have no experience with the wav, but don't find much unique about it. They actually were a bit larger than I thought they would be, and that was a negative for me.

I am in the same boat. i'm almost done with my 65g build and still don't know what i'm going to use. Either the Jaebo RW-8, or the Gyre. I have heard of a few bad things with the gyre with parts breaking and whatnot. but have not heard of anything bad about Jaebo. So more then likely i may go with jaebo and its hella lot cheaper.

I had been using my gyro for a year and it was hooked up to my apex. Mainly to turn it on and off, nothing fancy. The controller did the rest. I ran it opposite my Tunzes on the other side for a tide type pattern. I took it out to clean it a month ago and found power cord attached to the motor was disentigrated. Very scary considering it was in my tank! I contacted Coral Vue and they are sending a new part immediately, no questions asked (except proof of purchase). I am thinking this may be an issue. Otherwise, they are great customer service.

As far as wave making, it was good. I really like the control I get with my tunzes though. I have a mp on my 40g that does okay too. I have to clean often, but all my powerheads are like that.

There were major issues with the first batch of xf150s, with brittle power cords and vibration. They should have recalled them due to safety with the power cords but didn't. However, their customer service is good and the product is now solid with the improvements made. The xf130 was launched with the improvements out of the gate so I never had problems. I was a longtime vortech guy but not going back again. SPS love the broad, gentler flow and dont grow distorted due to hot spots of laminar or propeller flow.

I would do 2 so you can alternate flow patterns. The reverse mode is neat but too weak to be useful.

+1. The gyre moves a ton of water, but 2 gyres are really needed for bigger tanks. You can really make a lot of motion and movement in the water.

What are dimensions of tank? Xf150 is good for a 6' tank unless it's turned down quite a bit. I max out my 130s on my 90g at 80%
