I was looking at my tank tonight and noticed I have a baby polyp starting to grow! I've very excited as I heard these don't grow very quickly.

I picked up a frag locally of Dendros (3 heads) for $10, and mounted them upside down in an overhang on the front part of my tank.. First couple of days they were extended, looking great, fed them (boy can they eat), and they retracted and then for a week or two didn't do anything, barely came out at all even... I coaxed their polyps open, fed them and they have been huge all this & last week...

I love them, they look great, and can hardly wait until they multiply.

Three heads for $10? Where'd you buy them from?!

Glad to hear they opened back up for you.

A very kind local reefer, not sure he's on here but he's got an aquatics store in his garage... truly amazing!

I was kinda worried about them not opening for so many days, but they seem to be quite happy.

Darn, I placed mine too close to the Rhyzo. Didn't realize the Rhyzo was so aggressive. It killed the largest head. :( Good thing there's still 2 babies.

Could there possibly be any more mis-information in this post? Prices vary greatly and many local sources can provide very generous pieces for low prices. Also, dendro are most definitely not photosynthetic. They do require normal feedings to remain healthy and live. Light does not play any role in keeping a dendro alive. From the sound of it, I would guess what you have is a Duncan coral, some are similar in look to the dendro and they usually grow relatively fast. I have a Duncan that started with 2 large heads and now only a few months later have at least 16 or more heads. The Duncan is photosynthetic but appreciates occasional spot feeding of little meaty bits.

dendros are semi photosynthic, tubestreas which are cousins to dendros which are sun corals require frequent if not everyday feeding are not photosynthic at all and will die if not fed dendros however can live off light and pristine water condition with weekly feeding mine are usually out most of the day and mid evening go back in and atinics are on they come out for a little bit...i know what a dendro is im a big fan of them...and dendros are very expensive they sell for 50+ for 1 head tubestrea however you can buy a big colony for 40$ but will die if not fed...

true dendro 300$ piece..
I think the general consensus so far is that people are NOT paying $50+ per head for dendros, and I dont quite understand how these dendros people are buying are NOT real dendros, did I miss a meeting? Sure look like people are buying and posting pictures of dendros to me! Because they are not white, they are not a dendro? Really, come on now...

My post was intended as a caution, after seeing someone basically tell people they dont need to feed their dendros, because I would hate for someone else to kill their hard earned money from being mis-informed. And now after your follow up "posts" on the subject I have to admit even I am more confused now about what you are trying to say than before my last post! First you say you don't feed, then you say you do? I would invite you to please provide any bit of scientific information stating that Dendros are photosynthetic and I will gladly take back what I said. I haven't seen anything of the sort until you said so. 100% of the information regarding Dendros that I have ever read have stated they are "Non-Photosynthetic". I am extremely suspicious about one person that says the opposite, when that person cant even keep their own story straight.

i never at 1 point said dont feed i said i dont feed only once a week or 2....dendros are semi photosynthic meaning that they are not like other corals which require high lighting needs they like the light but feeding doesnt have to be a everyday thing like the tubeastreas howeva the hell u spell it...and there are a difference of dendros your rare typical dendro has a white orangeish looking bone before it gets to its tentacles and the bullshit ones ther are selling at lfs if they dont look like the guys that started this post its not a true dendro....like the last person that posted a pic of his dendro that is not a true dendro....its a bunch of crap how about that thats why they sell it for 10$ is that better for you..
