Is a 120w LED fixture overkill for a 20 gallon long, was planning to have it dimmed down as much as possible to allow proper acclimation. Or should shooting for around 80w doing a custom set up more worth it. Also in color spectrum, whats the advantages over full spectrum as oppose to a standard RB/W set up. I've been reading conflicting reports, wondering if its worth spending the extra loot on bulbs if i go on the custom route. Thanks for your time, any input and help.

Hi Ramon,

I actually have a 120W LED fixture on my 27 cube.

Are you trying to keep sps? I would go for the fixture as I was originally going to use it on a 10 gallon lol! I think it's more than powerful enough for whatever you're going to keep.

My tank is 21" deep and I have the fixture about 5" from the surface of the water. I had both channels turned all the way up and noticed my maxima clams weren't opening up all the way. Turned down the white channel to 80% and now they've opened again. This to me means that the light is really powerful!

Now if you're only going to do softies, zoas and palys, then you can still do the fixture, just keep it cranked down and keep the fixture raised significantly from the water surface. I'm going to raise mine up from 5" to 8" very soon.

One other thing: if you're planning on only keeping softies and stuff, you will eventually want sps, it's just a matter of time so it would be good to have that power available for your future needs. Plus, no bulbs to replace and minimal power consumption, as well as lower heat emitted.
