125 build needs help

So I am switching over from fowlr to a reef and ditching the canister filter and doing a sump. I just ordered a 125 rr and am using a laying around 55 gallon tank for the sump. The biggest concern is where to start! I have no clue what I am doing. Any pump suggestions, protein skimmer, how big of a fuge to go with, etc etc. and I did not order the overflow assesory kit so it is just going to be drilled and that's it. Any input would be great. Also any ideas on the build would b great
 
Get a skimmer that's rated way higher than 125, with the 55 make sure it fits under the stand. Make sure u r going to be able to take the skimmer out for maintance.
 
How big is the budget you can get some ok pumps on ebay for around 30-40$. I have a 1000gph on mine but before that I ran a 780gph and it did the job pretty good. I like the look of duble lockline for the return but to each there own. As for the skimmer I use a eshopps on all my tanks and have no problems had other high $$$ skimmers and the pumps lasted a year or 2 and then had to but the high $$ pumps from the maker I found that eshopps works great for me and the replacement parts are cheap. hope this helps
 
I have eshopps hob psk-?? Skimmer and like I will def stick w them. As for fitting under the stand I might build a spacer for under my stand to lower the 55 a bit. Great thinking that never crossed my mind!!

I did a search and found a few sump plans. Also I was thinking to run 2 pumps instead of one pump for the "just incase" factor. What do u think of that bad or good?
 
You could have a second pump on hand for backup but I wouldn't run 2. It will make Lot more heat.

First, congrats on taking the plunge! You will be happy you did.

My advice is to take a step back and figure out your goals. What animals would you like to keep? How much maintenance will you want to do? What is your budget?

Knowing some basic information will help other members advise you on keeping a successful reef aquarium. Also, keep an eye on the dry and live for sale threads on the forum. There are a ton of generous members and great deals on this forum.
