150 Watt Metal Halide Lighting Effects

My 150 watt metal halide sits 6 inches above the water surface of my 30 gallon tank.

It has a built in cooler so I don't have a problem with the light causing temperature changes in my water.

So besides issues of overheating my tank water, should I have any other reason for concern of harmful effects

of close distance of my light to my water surface?

Or to rephrase, Will the light cause harmful effects to my zoas if its too close(given that water temperature is in perfect range always?)

Your going to get splash on it that could be a problem with salt build up on it along with a hazzard risk.

Are you saying that the intensity of the light can still melt away my corals or overheat my corals, if too close, regardless of water temperture??

Any input on the above statement anyone?

Do you have a glass cover over your tank because if you do, splashing is not an issue. And yes, too much light will melt your corals. Not enough light won't melt them but they won't grow properly.

150w sitting at 6" is just fine. Too high might not be good because the light will spill over to the sides. You are fine at that height. Sometimes zoas close up for no reason. Check to see if you have any pests on them that might be bothering them and keeping them closed.

I had a 150w over my 29 gallon too at that height for awhile and never had any coral or heat issues. Everything grew just fine and stayed open.
