My cousin gave me his 40B so i decided that i would set it up. so far my plans are to take everything from my 5.5g and my 24g cardiff. For lighting i have a 36" double ho t5 and two 36" single ho t5's along with the 72watt led fixture. could use some help on what color/spectrum T5's i should use and what color combination. Im gonna take one of my ac110 hob and turn it into a fuge and am trying to find a reef octopus bh100 hob skimmer. I will be in the process of building a stand and canopy for it. i am not sure if i should make a full canopy or one that is around 6inches tall and that is suspended above the tank a few inches. You can drill the bottom on those if I'm not mistaken .. thought about doing one ... But I'm doing a sump instead..looking good so far..

thanks. i was thinking about going with the 700gph kit from glassholes .com but i dont trust myself drilling a tank.

Verry easy... Just keep wet .. firm pressure and strait.. don't rush... And if u do it before Jan 19th if you mess up ... $1. Gal petco sale . 40gbreeders $40 ;)

U can also bring the tank to mark at reef city hell drill it on spot for you for a small charge...or I'm sure for some coral or something someone would come to you and drill.. :)

with color of bulbs, it really falls into what you like it to look like. with having 4 bulbs, purple+, blue+, a 2 coral+ would be my guess. but again its to each his own. you may also have to change them up a little to see what the coral likes (what combo looks and grows the best). as far as the canopy. i like the above the tank idea. Again with lighting, it helps the light to combine more to get a better look. just talk to dohc97. he uses t5 ovwer a 40b and his took looks great

i would have to see some tanks running with those bulbs. so i might be getting another 40breeder that is drilled and has the glassholes 700gph overflow and a return kit. Would using a the undrilled 40 i already have as a sump/fuge be too much? i know i will have to make the stand bulkier to fit it or should i just go with the 29gallon i have sitting empty? Also any recommendations on a good 500-700gph pump? Also that is easy on the wallet haha

You could go either way on the sump. If you already have a 40b as a sump I would just keep that and use it. As far as pump, quiet one makes nice quiet pumps. If the noise is not an issue, the mag drive pumps can be found fairly inexpensive. Mag 5 or mag 7 will give you what your looking for. However I would consider going with a mag9, and get am adjustable valve in case you want more flow later.

thanks
i decided to just go with the 29g as the sump/fuge
here is one of my final designs. there is going to be a door on the side so i can slide the 29 in and out if i ever have to.

i still need to figure out how i am gonna support the canopy. I dont want to use wires to hang it from the ceiling. any suggestions
or should i just ditch that idea and just make a full canopy

your tank looks awesome. do you have any pics with the canopy when it is swung up?
i might have similar lighting setup but with a diy 72watt cree and 4 ho t5s. how is the look with the 2 antinics, coral+ and purple+ without the leds on

Thank you, In the first couple pictures after set-up, you can see my t5 lighting. Liked the color, but no shimmer and very low par numbers. I would go Prestige led 24" gamma. It would be perfect for that tank.

Thanks I already have a double t5 ho fixture and 2 single ones that I am gonna take everything out and install them in the canopy along with my 72watt DIY led that I have on my 24 right now. So total watts would be around 228wats.

so traded my bc14 i was selling for a 40breeder that has glassholes 700gph overflow kit and a 3/4inch loc line with flared nozzle also have some more locline and another flared nozzle but gotta find the y fitting. the tank is just sitting ontop of my dresser for no until i build the

also im wondering if anyone has any old used ati blue+ purple+ coral+ 36inch t5 ho bulbs that they dont need because they replaced them with new bulbs. I can take them instead of the garbage man haha. still need to figure out a color combo. because i am gonna take apart those fixtures and fasten them into the canopy.

might start on the stand during the week. still need to come up with some money for a return pump also i am gonna start making the 29g into a sump/fuge.

My friend is doing the exact same build as you right now except a 20L sump. I look forward to seeing how your tank ends up. What return pump do you plan on using? He is gonna try a Rio 2500 that he was given for free along with a purchase of corals.

i was gonna use the same exact pump because i have one that was sitting around that my buddy gave me a few years ago. i was planing on using it but then when i found it the wires are all messed up so there another expense.

but now i gotta buy a new pump. thinking about mag 7 or maybe rio 2500

Peter, I have some extra locline fittings you're entitled to, if you want. I can't remember what size they are, but they're either 1/2 or 3/4. I can give them to you over the weekend or whenever we meet up! Nice looking tank, and this is going to be a sweet build. Having a 40 gallon clinches that. :D
