8 year old LR

I bought a reef tank off of a guy and he said the LR has been in the tank for 8+ years. Should I boil it or just go ahead and use it? He had a lot of red bristle worms and when I set up my tank I don't want them or the algae in it.

What type of algae? You can remove bristle worms by dipping your rock in a high salinity. I think it is 1.035 - 1.040, if remember correctly. However, bristle worms are good to have. I wouldn't remove all of them.

That's some super cured rock. :)
I wouldn't boil it and kill all the beneficial micro organisms in/on it...as far as the algae, try scrubbing it off the rocks, the bristleworms are a good part of the cuc, but if you really want them removed, some fish will prey on them.

I believe Margarita snails will get rid of the red turf. GHA can be removed manual, by turbo snails and keeping your water in check.

So you think I should just go ahead and use the LR with out doing anything? Right now it is sitting outside in tuperware conatiners with no water.

I just want to make sure the tank is clean and I'm not going to have any problems with bad algae or hitch hickers

New tanks will usually have an algae issue. Dipping in high salinity will run hitch hickers out, and you can select what you want to keep.

Don't boil it! I almost died making the mistake of boiling live rock. You can "cook" it which is putting it in a bucket with no light for a month the starve the algea out (with salt water, heater, and power head).

So since it has been outside for over 6 hours without water should I bring it in when I wake up and add saltwater to it?
