I have a 75gpd unit...but being the 20lbs of watery filter nightmae space taker-upper it is, anyway around using ro/di water for the case of a saltwater college tank?

I know i know there have been horror stories but Im pre arranged with a buddy so I dont have AS many worries.

Biggest one right now is how to make perfectly safe saltwater without an ro/di? tap water was horrendous when i checked there, but any alternative to lugging around a behemoth water purification system?

If not, probably going planted tank or shell dweller tank

also, hauling buckets of water on this

would not be a fun experience...

You can probably hook up a DI only unit. You'll burn through a ton of DI resin, but it's a start.

How about the dare I say petco water. Order online and have shipped to dorm

eh...might as well go fw until i can convince the bio department to do salt again in their 3 classroom sized fish room

Hm, are you in a dorm, or do you have your own apartment? The rodi equipment isn't so much of a space killer as is all of the water containers... I mean, yes, in a dorm it takes up a lot of space, but then, the buckets would take up even more? Where abouts are you, perhaps there are some friendly local reefers that can help you out? Ordering water works too - just hope the mail people don't trash your packages. My local USPS is terrible, and my local UPS / Fedex isn't much better - hence I do anything I can to avoid ordering fragile (or live) things online now.

Go fowlr and use tap treated with Prime. I did it for years with no issues. Did it all the way through college and for many years after. I'd do it again if I had fowlr.

How many gallons of salt you trying to create? If you are doing FOwLR just use the RO/DI unit without the RO membrane. If you are a college student setup a nano tank. Where in the Chicagoland area are you in? I think there is still a 14g nano cube for sale here on the forum and I think he was selling it for $30. All you have to worry about is 14 whole some gallons. For initial setup you start with treated tap water. Once you begin to water changes you start to use RO/DI water. That is what I would do, if I was in your situation.

How bad is the tap water? When I first started out a reef tank I used tap water treated with Prime and had no problems. The tds of the water in my area is about 137. Another option would be a portable rodi; there are a few available on eBay.
