Is there any real need for the apex display module? does it do anything other than the convenience of not having my phone or computer by the tank? Also is there any difference between the orange and black labled units?

There are some features that you need a head unit for. The most important is probe calibration in my opinion.

I think you need the display unit for software upgrades. And as far as I know there is no difference between the ones with the orange stickers or the black ones. The black ones are just older.

Best way to upgrade is use a PC, I have a MAC, Apex has a MAC app, but, web pages often fail to update, so I run windows on the same computer, download the APEX upgrade/update and run the executable. It's pretty easy, but, doesn't require the display. Here is a good link to the process... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMerw1KDRt8

Best reason to have the display is to dose, feed, etc in front of the tank and get a fairly (about 1-2 second delay) real-time look vs the web page or fusion, as well as have a button near the tank without a computer to be able to initiate a feeding cycle. This said, I have found noting that can't be done from the web page, that can be done on the display.

Unless you are hard wired I wouldn't (personally) use anything but the head unit for calibration. I also did the firmware upgrade with my Mac, had no issues.

I have both 1Gb/10Gb switches for hardwired applications and Cisco wireless infrastructure with 2504 and 4 A/Ps, the ability to calibrate a probe or perform a function on wireless is no different than wired assuming your coverage is clear, you have adequate bandwidth and rogue protection. The above said networking is not everyone's full time job, and may depend on Comcast or AT&T wifi included in the Cable or DSL modem to provide their wireless network. So, to clarify if your wireless networking is solid, which includes the laptop, you could use that to calibrate your probes without display. If you have a questionable wireless network, then you should fix it or disable it with use on almost all IoT (Internet of Things), since most devices update firmware over network and it will bite you one day or another.

I have also done updates with Native Mac OS without trouble, but, the last two have failed to update webpages. Until my last post ( https://forum.neptunesystems.com/sh...update-for-4-40-8F15&highlight=windows+fusion ) Apex denied the problem and said they never heard of it, now in the newest release, they are admitting failure - https://forum.neptunesystems.com/sh...Firmware-version-4-40_CD15-FOR-MAC-USERS-ONLY

I was unaware that you could set up the web interface without a display to start with? granted i set up that interface like two years ago and haven't gone back to it since fusion came out lol.

If you have a dhcp server with no special knowledge you can probably guess the IP address when you plug apex in. If you know how to find the newest lease or lease on the switch port you don't have to guess. You can go right into the web page, obviously I'm a nerd, but I love control and 90% of the time I'm not in front of the tank so it has to be remote and unfortunately the display is usb so I quickly learned how to do most everything remote.

The update software package from Neptune will also automatically ping and find the apex on the network and let you go to the webpages.
