all sps were from 3/4 to one inch frags some even smaller i got from friends in the hobby . im not gonna say these guys r wrong about there being a difference in cheap equipment and big money equipment . im just saying it can be done with the cheaper stuff too. just takes more dedication. one thing i forgot to add and probably helped me the most is water temp staying stabile. i have chillers on both tanks but really never kick on more for safety . now i know apex r cool but im cheap and dont need fancy equipment just fancy coral and fish lol. i ended up ordering a temp control off ebay from hongkong was like 25$ it controls heat and fan all u have to do is hook up to u heater and u fan and run a power cord for the controller works great water to cold kicks heat on too hot turns heater off and fan on if just right both r off . called a mini digital temperature control theromaste for aquariums seller was uni-mart product # was 190565661681. might be good investment its in celcius but i just downloaded a coverter app. gotta make sure its right one they all look the same but found out they different the hard way u will want one that controls both and has the tight temp tolerance good luck with the build . hope i was some help

I'll echo others here and say that you can do without skimmers, dosing, etc. However the equipment gives you a safety factor that can make the difference between life and death if you are not dedicating time every day to monitor and take care of a small water volume reef.

You'd probably have to do water changes 2x weekly with a good salt like Red Sea Coral Pro to keep your params up if you don't dose once your SPS starts rolling. I find it a challenge to keep my ALK/CA consistent and I run a fully automated dosing system. You also have to make sure that your water change temp and other parameters are the same as your tank to avoid shocking it.

I guess, in my experience the money you spend on automating your system is inversely proportional to the amount of time you spend maintaining the tank. If you are dedicated you can do it on the cheap. But I am lazy. ;)

I see do you have a recommendation for a different second fish to go with the firefish in a 20g tank?

Maybe a pair of clowns?

EXACTLY. I told myself i would be dedicated with my latest tank. Im a week behind on a 5 gallon water change when it used to be 40 gallons...

Thanks for all the responses and info guys.

I don't want clowns in this tank I'm looking for two small fish that are very light on the bioload I'm almost for sure on a firefish but still need ideas for a second. This is going to be a low nutrient system so I don't want messy eaters just something small bright colors non aggressive and not shy let me know what you think.
